Damon reacts on instinct, shouting, "Get the fuck away from me!"
Adrenaline courses through his veins; he doesn't think before he's slapping the hand away from him, desperate to get away.
Only somehow, miraculously, their hands don't touch. Not because Damon misses, but because his hand falls through the other man's.
Instead of reacting with shock, like any normal person, a look of understanding crosses the shade's face. "Oh. Oh."
"What the hell are you?" Damon finally asks the right question.
As if to reward him, the being answers, "I think I'm a ghost."
On Halloween, a strange man appears in Damon's bedroom. He claims to be a ghost from a future he warns Damon to avoid at all costs, but what is it he's asking Damon to give up?

“Hi,” Damon whispers, his voice soft.
Kai’s voice cracks a little with his reply, “Hi.”
There’s nothing to say, really. No words to be found in a situation as morbid as theirs. They can promise to keep each other safe, though it’s nothing that hasn’t been stated before. Besides, on a night like this it would only taste hollow.
Only five students remain; Damon does his best to keep his makeshift family together.

“We won’t be doing that,” Damon responds sharply. “We’d like to go home now.”
“Kid, you boys won’t be able to just disappear. I’m not sure there’s a single person on earth who hasn’t gotten invested in this case. Shouldn’t you be used to the attention, being Ultimates?”
“They can fuck off,” Kai decides. Damon has to hold back a laugh; it’s funny seeing the cop’s face turn red.
Damon and Kai have escaped Eden’s Garden. Unleashed into a world that will never believe the truth of what happened to them, recovery feels impossible. At least they have each other.

It was too dark to see but Damon could tell that Kai’s eyes were filling with waterworks.

“Fine!” Kai huffed, then moved closer to Damon so their chests were touching.
Despite there being no killing game, Damon still manages to find himself the class pariah. He should’ve known that attending their class’ holiday party would be a bad idea. Sticking around to play their dumbass drinking games? An even worse one.
