“Warning,” the little computer in his headset screeched as Sasuke prepared to cut the implant out of his arm. “Procedure is outside recommended safety protocols.”
“Yes, thank you I know that.” Sasuke hissed between gritted teeth, he could hear the sound of Naruto outside the door and knew that he had mere seconds before the Alpha tore it off its hinges.
He didn’t however much like the idea of being beaten to death by his best friend in a Temporin-induced rage.
What he hadn’t taken into account was that Naruto would bite him instead, but then again considering their relationship he probably should have seen that one coming.

Summary
His alertness is a sudden thing, a quick snap from sleeping to full consciousness. He draws an ever-present kunai from his belt, moves smoothly to a crouch.
“Katon no jutsu!” He hears, yelled with reckless abandon. He waits for the flash of flame of the technique, but none comes.
Kakashi shifts forward on his perch, allowing him a clear view of the river. There’s a boy stood next to it, on the opposite side from Kakashi. He’s maybe a couple of years older than Kakashi, dressed in navy and… orange?
“Katon no jutsu!” He says again, and this time Kakashi can see why there was no flame; as the boy all but shouts the words, he forms his hands into the sloppiest attempt at a tiger seal Kakashi has ever seen.
Kakashi can’t help his snort at the rather pathetic attempt, and the other boy whirls to him in the worst display of coordination Kakashi has ever seen, turning so fast that he ends up nearly falling over into the water. The movement lacks any of the grace characteristic of a shinobi, flailing and full of wasted motion. Kakashi’s pretty sure he’s seen two-year-olds move with more grace.

Kakashi rammed into Obito’s personal space and pressed his face closer until Obito could make out the faint scar trailing his cheekbone and feel the hot fan of breath escaping his mask. “I chose to complete the mission; you chose to save Rin. Only once of us had the strength to succeed.”
The comment struck Obito like ice to an exposed nerve. He flinched back, Sharingan flaring instinctively at the perceived threat.
Kakashi huffed humorlessly and withdrew beneath the harsh shadows of the Hokage Tower. “That’s right, remember this. Maybe one day you’ll look back to now and finally have the strength to do what it takes.”
Pure revulsion rolled in Obito’s at the sight of this unforgiving creature that Kakashi had become—all sharp edges and unrelenting lines. He took a step back and swallowed back the questions threatening to spew out. What happened to you?
OR
Kakashi never heads back during the Kannabi Bridge Mission.

Summary
Obito arrives a few moments earlier when Rin jumps in front of Kakashi’s chidori. He’s still too late to save her, but he’s in time to watch the sequence of events that makes Kakashi shatter. Instead of returning to Madara, he chooses to live by his own mantra and refuses to abandon his friend in his time of need. Obito returns to Konoha with Kakashi, and this results in just a few unintended consequences. One of them being his insistence that he should be allowed to care for his late sensei’s orphan son, no matter what the Sandaime might say about the matter. He’s not quite sure how Kakashi becoming his unofficial co-parent fits into this, but he’ll figure it out eventually.

Kakashi and Obito are going through a rough patch in their relationship right now.
Unfortunately for them, life (namely, a time-traveling, mini Team Minato being plopped into a future where two-fourths of them are dead) could not give less of a damn.
