“I think it is very possible that Master Qifrey is in love with Master Olly.”

    Agott blinked. “Pardon?”

“But wait!” Coco held up a finger. “I think that Master Olly is also in love with Master Qifrey.”

Upon realizing grown-ups sometimes don't know how to talk to each other about their feelings, the girls decide to play matchmaker.

    Summary

“You know,” Olruggio says, roughly. He doesn’t move to take Qifrey’s hand again. “You know. You can’t not know, Qifrey.”

Qifrey just looks at him. “I do.”

    The rain continues falling.

(And so Olruggio forgets. And he inevitably figures it out again, because of course he does; and he inevitably chooses to forget again, and again, and again, because his heart is always the same. The story is always the same. Like a tale from under a silverwood tree, like a myth from the days of old, not so much tied by the constraints of the narrative so much as being narrative itself. Antigone must bury her brother. Iphigenia must be put to death. At a thousand turns, in a thousand ways, Orpheus must turn, and he must look, again, and again.

    And Olruggio forgets.)

There is an old story about a witch and a silverwood tree.

    Summary

"Wow, that was close!" A chuckle rang out right next to his ear.

Olruggio turned his head to the side, and was met with a man who looked like he came out straight out of the ice, Jack Frost style. His short snow-white hair was slightly curly. It was covering one of his eyes. And he had peculiar glasses on; one lens clear and one dark.

That was the most beautiful man Olruggio had ever seen.

Or, Olruggio and Qifrey teach each other archery and ice skating. Both of them yearn too much for their age. (Is what they think. Society can never have too much of yearning men.)

    Summary

At Alderbridge College, Professors Qifrey and Olruggio insist they’re “just colleagues.” Everyone else assumes they’re married.

Qifrey teaches art education with warm smiles, wandering tangents, and a cup of tea he’s already misplaced. His office is full of plants and student art; his heart is full of things he never says. He cares too much, works too hard, and hides exhaustion behind gentle humor.

Olruggio teaches industrial safety engineering with immaculate PowerPoints and the blunt promise that he’s “here to make sure you don’t die.” Students think he’s terrifying until they realize he’s just structured, observant, and quietly protective. His office is spotless. His patience is not.

They orbit each other through shared routines—tea left on a desk, broken things quietly fixed, soft chaos meeting steady structure. A slow burn built on unspoken affection, domestic habits, and the kind of devotion neither of them names.

    Everyone sees it.
    Except them.

    Summary

It starts, as so many things seem to, with Qifrey being absolutely miserable. It's not the ever present ache of his missing eye that used to follow him every waking second, nor the quiet underlying sense of dread that had never left him, cultivated by his own design to keep the silvertree roots at bay before the medics at the healing spire has cut him open and removed it with a precision no one thought possible. No, this was an entirely different sort of misery, one that was so mundane it bordered on comical in contrast to what he had endured.

    Qifrey, quite plainly, is sick.

Or: Two years after getting rid of the silvertree seed, something new starts growing.
