    Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan find a prophesied chosen one and capture a Sith apprentice on Tatooine. This has ramifications for the Jedi as an institution and for the galaxy as a whole, of course, but the value of one man in the fate of all things is that of a single rice grain in a harvest. Dark powers are at work in the galaxy, and chaos waits for none.

    (Or: The realization that I'm both taller and older than Darth Maul in TPM is really quire jarring and alphamikefoxtrot is a wonderful enabler, so instead of doing any of the many things I should be doing I'm writing prequels-era fic. Oops.)

    Update 3 January: The fallout from Mortis and the resolution of the Sith holocron plot. Everything goes horribly wrong, because this is Star Wars with a side of Three Kingdoms, what do you expect.

    Maul dies on Tatooine and wakes up over 40 years in the past. He quickly seizes the opportunity to change his fate and free himself from his Master, to save his brothers, including the one he doesn't yet know he has, and plot a new revenge against Darth Sidious with the advantages of time, foreknowledge and a surprisingly familiar Mandalorian face. It isn't only his own destiny that Maul's actions will change for the better, but that of Jango Fett and the entire Mandalorian people.

    As far as the Force and the Ka'ra are concerned, healing hearts through the power of family and friendship will just be a nice side effect of saving the galaxy from its terrible future.

    When the Republic falls, Maul is being transported to Coruscant for "justice"--but in the chaos, he escapes onto the planet, where he finds a captured and injured Obi-Wan. Desperate for any chance of survival, he spirits himself and his hated nemesis to Jedha, where the two of them become allies bound together by a painful past. And then, a meeting: Ahsoka Tano, willing to take a chance.
