Caitlyn goes to the range for the first time when she’s five. It’s something she’s wanted for as long as she can remember. She’s been asking about the rifles over the mantlepiece since she could speak, has watched Mother march her rifle out the back door since she was four and now she’s here.
She sits on the bench under the awning, the ear protection placed tight over her small ponytail, a finely burnished brass filigree set of oak and plush navy velvet.
It matches Mother’s set.
Cassandra teaches Caitlyn to shoot.

Summary
Turning to see a gun pointed directly at her head was terrifying—but watching Jayce collapse with blood pouring from his back and his shoulder, staining both his coat and the stage he once delivered speeches from red, is somehow worse. A permanent reminder of what happened here. And that would be the point, wouldn’t it? To remind them of the losses they already suffered, and then the people they would lose today.
“Jayce,” Mel says, and there’s a shift in her mother’s expression. It’s not quite annoyance, not quite anger, but a distaste that twists her lips into a grimace. Mel knows she doesn’t like Jayce—that she thinks he weakens her, that he influences her far too much in far too many ways. Ways that she doesn’t approve of. “Is he alright? Has anyone seen him?”
After the attack at the memorial, Mel sets off in search of Jayce.

He holds out his hand.

Summary
Noxians were not prone to speaking their feelings plain, something that Mel missed about Piltover. About the man she’d known there, the one with the gap in his teeth and the soft, uneven mouth that smiled when she kissed it. Instead, her countrymen located their grief in their war-worn bodies, and loss was conveyed in the vocabulary of wounds and battle scars.
Grief was a cut, an untended sore that burgeoned and ached. It was a cleft in the muscle that immobilized the limb. The carve of a wound that refused all healing.
Mel grieves.

Ambessa has never dealt in hugs, in bedtime stories that didn't leave Mel wide awake in the dark, compliments or even begrudging praise, nor jokes that weren't the sharp blade of her criticism wrapped in thin silk. She is a teacher, a critic, a disciplinarian, and a true tormentor if (when) that is the face she decides Mel deserves.
Her gaze only truly lacks ire under one condition: when she catches sight of Mel with soft edges at the breakfast table, the countless twists in her daughter's hair fuzzed from the prior week or so of daily wear.

She tries to release him, disgusted, disappointed with this entire impotent town—but his fingertips slide down to encircle the back of her wrist. Quick, the white flash of teeth before a bite, he flips her hand back and presses a kiss to the centre of her palm.
