“Shut it, Abby, you’re gonna wake him up!”
Grace buries his head deeper into the crook of his elbow, desperate to get a few more minutes of sleep, the movement eliciting the noise of giggling from the room around him. His brain doesn’t register anything strange about the sound, until he remembers that he’s supposed to be in the middle of space. Space, where Grace should be completely alone, and Rocky should be well on his way back to Erid.
He jolts upright, suddenly far more awake. The quiet giggling erupts into full blown laughter, and Grace suddenly realises that he’s in his classroom, and the students laughing at him are the same ones he last taught fifteen years ago.

“Dr. Grace,” Stratt’s even and calm voice reaches him. There’s a hint of reproach in it. He closes his eyes. “You’ve been neglecting your duties. In the future, a warning would be most helpful so we can avoid the fires your absence caused.”
His chin drops to his chest and a bitter laugh escapes his lips. “You’re unbelievable, Eva Stratt.”
There’s a short pause.
“Thank you.”
He shakes his head and looks out towards the water. “Were you ever going to tell me?”
“No.” Simple, succinct and to the point. She’s just the Eva Stratt he knows. She’s incapable of being any one else.
“Why not?”

Dr. Grace finds out that he has the coma-resistance gene and that Director Stratt has sealed his fate as the tertiary science specialist without his knowledge. He grapples with the betrayal by flying to San Francisco.
