    Summary

Scott's been the subject of a lot of rude comments, on and off the ice. One of the things he'd braced himself for. One thing he hadn't expected was to hear that people who made those comments while playing Ottawa tended to get punched by one Ilya Rozanov.

"Good speech tonight," Rozanov says. "See you next season, fossil."

And then he's gone. Scott isn't sure what to make of what just happened. There's some sort of suspicion scratching at the back of his mind, one he's refusing to look at. That feels too big to tackle, to carry, even only as an idea.

But for the first time you were so brave doesn't sound like it's covering a desire to say wow, that was stupid of you. For the first time, he feels like he's wedged a door open.

And he thinks, maybe, there's someone behind him, considering following him through.

    Summary

Before they were hockey’s greatest rivals, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov were two fourteen-year-olds arguing anonymously on the internet.

One conversation became another, and suddenly they were talking every day. English lessons lead to game-tape analysis, late-night messages, phone calls, and secrets neither of them could tell anyone else. They become best friends. Then something more.

By the time they finally meet, the world has already decided they should be enemies. The hockey world will spend years watching them fight from opposite sides of the ice, never knowing they have been choosing each other since long before either of them was famous.

Or: Shane corrects Ilya’s English, Ilya teaches Shane how to want things, and they spend the next decade turning their rivalry into a shared home.

Rozanov mentioned that he missed his mother once, then changed the subject so quickly that Shane nearly missed it. Shane admitted that he hated interviews, mainly because people expected him to be a certain kind of version of himself. Neither confession lasted more than a minute, but both stayed with them afterwards.

By the end of the month, Shane no longer needed Rozanov to explain his mood. He could hear it in hello.

Ilya could hear Hollander smile before he had made a sound.

“How bad is it going to be?” he asks. “Like… just be honest.”

    Ilya doesn’t answer right away.

“Everyone keeps telling me it’s gonna be okay,” Hayden continues, frustration bleeding through now. “That we’ll manage it. That medicine is good these days. But I know that’s bullshit. I know it won’t fucking be.”

He finally looks at Ilya, eyes searching. “Just tell me how bad,” he says.

    Summary

Hayden felt sick as he saw Shane glance between them and his own phone in J.J.’s hand, taking in what was probably his worst nightmare playing out right in front of him. Because Hayden could see it, within seconds, the way his face closed off, went blank, like he knew exactly what was happening because he’d been dreading it for so long.

But his eyes, fuck, his eyes showed everything even as he went very still. The bone-deep profound terror was all there.

Hayden wanted everything to stop, he wanted to shove J.J. out of the room, shove himself out of this situation, shove Shane out of harm’s way.

“Why the fuck is Rozanov sexting you?”

Hayden wanted to shove the shirt Shane hadn’t had time to put on in J.J.’s fucking mouth.

“Pike is still there, yes? Can you hug Shane?”

Shane tensed up again, putting his hands up defensively even though Hayden was already moving forward, both of them freezing. “He wouldn’t- he doesn’t-”

“Shane. Pike is many lame things but he is not homophobic. Right?”

    “No, god, of course not.”

    “Then can you hug Sha-”

“Yes, fuck. Yes. Shane, can I please hug you? Please.”

Shane looked so relieved it made Hayden tear up as he launched forward the second Shane nodded, phone falling onto the carpet between them. Shane made another awful little noise, a held-back sob that just made Hayden hug him harder.

“What is happening? Did you fuck up hugging him, Pike?”

    Summary

Cliff knew that this probably violated the promise he made to Roz when he had given him a spare key. It was for emergencies only. He hoped he kept his key privileges after tonight.

Because throwing a surprise pizza/movie night in Roz’s own home for when he returned to Boston from his father’s funeral in Russia? That probably didn’t count as an emergency.

But fuck it. Roz was his best friend, and while his father may have sucked, it’s still awful losing a parent. Roz should have his friends here, waiting to support him when he gets back.

The only thing that could make this better was if Cliff knew who Jane was, so she could be here for him too.

    “Shane?” His voice broke.

“Ilya…” Hollander started forward, moving past the group.

As soon as Roz saw him, everything else melted away. He didn’t look anywhere else, just locking eyes with Hollander, shoulders sagging with relief. His bag slipped off his shoulder to unceremoniously thunk against the floor.

“Moya lyubov',” He let out a rough breath and ran, fully ran, and bodily slammed into Hollander, their arms wrapping around each other tightly. It was only Cliff and St Simon catching them that prevented them falling to the ground.
