Summary

I memorized Enid as the hours passed. The bruising had began its slow migration toward uglier colors. The lacerations along her cheek appeared cleaner now, stitched and orderly. Her hair, brushed away from the worst of the damage, spread across the pillow in a golden disarray that made my chest tighten. Whoever invented the term “sleeping beauty” should have been exhumed and slapped—there existed nothing so decorative about rest after violence. Recovery wore pain openly. It breathed through cracked lips and IV lines and small involuntary twitches. And yet, even laid bare in ruin, Enid remained devastating to behold because she was still utterly, unmistakably radiant.
I reached for the plastic cup of water just as the whisper started.
Death has been fascinated by Wednesday Addams for a long time. So, when she calls upon it to bring Enid back, it agrees, but under a single condition: one day, Wednesday must take Death’s place.
