It’s not like they didn’t know this day would come.
They expect it after the first few games, and at the end of the first year, and a little less after the calls for their second season, and it’s only a passing thought the following games, but it never leaves anyone’s mind entirely that one day, the boys will come back from war, and women’s baseball will dissolve. The word for it is ephemeral; a short-lasting, beautiful thing, like the lifespan of a butterfly, or a ship built to sink.
And it’s at the end of their second, beautiful season, that they learn their fate.
The year is 1945, the war is over, and the soldiers are coming home.
And the AAGPBL is over.
