No one would pick up. She tried again and again, finally leaving voicemail messages and texting the group chat over and over again, in the hopes that someone would see them, that someone would know what to do.
But no one responded.
Spencer wouldn’t stop crying, no matter what encouragements and promises Derek was saying to him. The sun was setting and Derek couldn’t get the ropes untied and Spencer had long since stopped making sense and JJ couldn’t get anyone on the phone and it felt like everything was falling down around her shoulders- again.
“Derek, no one’s answering.” JJ felt like she was eleven years old again, stuck in the doorway to her big sister’s room, unable to move, unable to scream as the world ended.

“Yeah, fine,” Hotch responded. He sipped at the water and left the apple sitting on the table in front of him.
Alex glanced at Emily and shrugged, going back to her book. Emily looked Hotch over, not convinced even a little. He was pale and sweaty and he looked like he was shivering even from where she was sitting a few seats away.
