Camp Burgess is a wildlife activity center in Kansas that has a summer camp program as well as year-long events such as hiking and camping in the forest preserve, boating and aquatic sports, educational and recreational activities for school trips and families, and more. It’s a popular location for young people to learn how to hunt, fish, and survive in the wilderness.
Benson has worked there full-time for four years as an EMT and firearms coach, and this is Randy’s second year as a summer camp counselor.

And when Randy had looked in that mirror, he hadn’t had an answer at the time. Now, he did.
Benson survived the shooting outside the Kutzburg diner, and ten years later he was paroled. With only one thing left to live for, Benson knew exactly what he was going to do with his impending freedom.
When he found out about Benson's parole only a few months before it would end, something broke in Randy, threatening the safety and stability of the life he had been building in the wake of Benson's storm.

Against all odds, Randy somehow stumbled his way out of the stranger turned coworker turned kind-of-friend square into some mystical fifth one: the kind of person whose throat Benson wanted to stick his tongue down.
