“...oh,” his mom says. “Oh, honey, you were seeing someone? You never said anything.”
“It’s-it’s complicated.” He catches the present tense too fucking late to do anything about it, and he barely resists the urge to either groan or slip forward to start beating his head against the coffee table.
Fuck his fucking life.
“You’re still…seeing this person?” His mom asks, and the amount of control he can hear her exerting is almost painful. “Who is-”
“Yuna,” his dad cuts in, voice quiet, “maybe give him a second, yeah?”
Yeah, Shane agrees in his head. Give him a second.
Maybe give him a decade while they’re at it.
(when shane's old fake id falls out of his wallet around his parents, he has to explain that it was to book hotel rooms before he was 21)
(...and then he has to explain why he needed to book those hotel rooms in the first place)

Summary
He’s standing across from Ilya in his kitchen. Their feet are almost touching, Ilya’s in black socks that Shane also has multiple pairs of, Shane’s in his favourite soft striped ones. The rain is getting louder outside, moving from a drizzle to a downpour. And Ilya is looking at him like he loves him.

screaming and sobbing in the club this is insanely good oh my good THE EMOTIONS
[“Oh, baby,” Yuna breathes.
He shakes his head, finally reaching for Shane’s hand again like he can’t help himself, and his fingertips are pressing into the side of Shane’s wrist, right against his pulse.
“Hey,” Yuna says softly. He shakes his head again. “Ilya, honey, look at me.”
…
He listens to him breathe, listens to it steady and slow until he’s breathing normally, and he kind of hates how practiced it sounds, how it sounds like Ilya brings himself down from panic attacks often.
…
“I feel like I woke up in an alternate universe,” Shane says, leaning against the counter. Ilya stands opposite him, leaning back like he’s mirroring him. “Where Ilya Rozanov is friends with my mom.”
Ilya’s face lights up, like he hadn’t thought about it as being friends with her. It’s adorable, and it makes Shane want to grab him by the shoulders and shake him.
…
“Hi, baby,” he murmurs. “You okay?”
Ilya nods absently.
Shane leans in to kiss him softly, ignoring the way his mouth opens desperately, the way he attempts to lean closer, pressing into Shane’s palm. He kisses his top lip, then his bottom lip, then his chin. Ilya smiles. ] -

He wanted to take it back instantly. Wanted to swallow his name down, down, down, shove it back into his heart where he’s been hiding it for - god - years. He wanted to go back in time a few seconds, to just before the moment when he ruined it all. He’d call him Hollander, instead. He’d whisper something sweet in Russian so Shane would never know - so Ilya could speak his feelings into existence without Shane hearing them.
He’d do anything at all to fix it.
(Or, Shane leaves. Then he comes back.)

Summary
Ilya knew, right from the very moment he met Shane Hollander, that he would never be good enough for him. He’d seemed so…pristine, when they first met. Untouched. And Ilya knew his unclean hands would only dirty him up. He’s always been selfish, though; his father used to tell him that.
So it’s no surprise, really, that Shane has finally gotten tired of it. Of him, always needing more from Shane than he deserves - always begging for more than he has earned.
Ilya would leave himself, too, if he could.
(Or, five time Ilya thought Shane would leave, and one time he knew he wasn’t going anywhere.)

[“Ilya, baby,” Shane murmurs, both hands now holding Ilya’s face. “No one else’s opinion on us matters, okay? I know you and I love you, and you know me and love me. Nothing changes that.”
“You promise?” Ilya asks, sounding soft and fragile, and every bit like the little boy inside of him who’s still terrified of being left behind.]

Summary
Michael reached a hand up to his face, dragging his fingers across his mouth, when pulling his hand back red coated his fingers. Michael swallowed thickly as his hands began to shake in front of him. Blood… It was blood. The realization settled in Michael’s stomach, twisting his insides and with a jolt, he jerked his head upwards. The animatronics were still singing their pre-recorded songs, but Fredbear had stopped moving. Evan hung limply from his mouth, one of his arms caught between the teeth where he had tried to push himself out.
As if he had been struck across the face, Michael stumbled backward, his ears ringing as everything except the gory scene in front of him faded away.
Or, the bite of '83 still happens, but this time CC survives.

Summary
In another timeline, Shane and Ilya hook up in room 1410, nothing goes wrong, and everything plays out exactly as we know it.
In this one, Yuna Hollander walks in before Ilya can leave—and the seven-year situationship never gets the chance to start. Instead, through the power of miscommunication, Shane and Ilya start dating in 2010. With better support, they make better decisions. Their rivalry fizzles out before it ever has the chance to fully ignite, replaced instead by a beloved “bromance". In 2015, they come out to the NHL and the world.
No one believes them.
Or: Somehow, despite Shane and Ilya being out for two years, Scott Hunter is still considered the first openly gay player in the NHL, much to Ilya’s horror.

Several things happen quickly before Shane can finish the thought.
“David,” Yuna says sharply, her voice echoing in the empty hallway, and Shane jerks his eyes to her before looking where she’s looking, to where Ilya has staggered against David, who shoulders his weight without flinching. Like he expected it.

genuinely almost started crying absolutely amazing characterization and such such a beautiful way to write grief
[He’s knows he’s ruining everything. This beautiful work Shane had created out of the ashes of Ilya’s past. He’s ruining the fragile fiction he’d worked so hard to create for the Hollanders, so that they might think he’s safe enough for their son, strong enough to stand with him. He’s ruining the only thing that might have kept some echo of his mother in this world.
…
Ilya’s hands come together, and he starts rubbing his thumb over his wrist. Self-soothing. That’s what gets Shane’s feet to start obeying him. He needs to be doing the soothing. That’s his job.
…
Shane might have that meeting room filled with concrete, actually.

The Voyageurs and Bears are tied at the start of the third. Ilya’s eyes meet Shane’s at center ice, a quick wink behind his visor before he wins the faceoff, and then they’re off, Shane tracking each pass, each change of possession, each cut of mirrored blades beneath their feet.
In a way, the hit feels horribly out of place on a night like tonight, when what Shane and Ilya have feels untouchable.

“I didn’t come out today because I owe anyone an explanation. I came out because I refuse to let the man I love stand alone while the world decides his worth. We've spent years hiding and even denying our feelings for one another because we were afraid of what people would say. We thought we were protecting each other. That ends today. I’m done caring about anyone except me and him.”

A leaked photo leaves Ilya exposed, and the league wastes no time deciding what to do with him.
Ilya is willing to lose everything if it means Shane gets to keep his career.
Shane takes exactly one look at the world trying to shame the man he loves and decides that if Ilya's name is going to be in every headline, his will be too.
The only thing more dangerous than outing Ilya is giving Shane a reason to fight.

[“Hey, Hunter!”, Shane stopped him without thinking. “Just know that there are lots of people who would be happy to have a meeting with Ilya Rozanov. He has many demands on his time!”
Scott looked just as confused as he looked scandalized. “I'll keep that in mind.” Then he walked off. Shane watched him go, then knocked on Rose's door.
“Tell me everything I need to know to win back a guy!”]

Ilya is tired of being called stupid. Tired of reporters blinking at him like he’s buffering. Tired of social media deciding that an accent equals ignorance. So he decides to fix it.
Shane lets it be a joke — until he hears Ilya sanding down the edges of himself under bright arena lights. He doesn’t interrupt interviews. Until he does.

Summary
In 2008, Shane Hollander lost to Ilya Rozanov. Fresh-faced, hungry. Like he’d been living off victory points that were scraps compared to the real thing, compared to beating Rozanov, the first man in the world to make him feel second-best. Back then, he’d thought that was the only thing he felt, too. That the electric pulse jostling between them in the gym some time later was a trick of the mind. It was like seeing sky above for the first time. See you at the draft. Life in that paper body.
or: Ilya comes back. This is the crux of it.

What if Ilya answered the phone call from his brother when Shane was at his house. What if Shane could be there for him and how would it have changed their relationship moving forward?
------
Shane didn’t hear from Ilya again for the rest of the day. He had just crawled into bed, and was about to slip on his glasses on to read the book from his bedside table when his phone buzzed
The message he found when he opened their thread was not what he expected
Lily: I think you packed wrong shirt by mistake.
The photo was Ilya’s hands holding Shane’s white t-shirt. He stared at the picture as heat rose to his cheeks, biting his lower lip as he tried to figure out what he should respond. Before he could start typing another message appeared.
Lily: This one is too small for me.
Shane scowled, his embarrassment quickly turning to annoyance.
Jane: It is not. We are the same size.
Lily: Uh, no. We are not. I am bigger than you.
Jane: Asshole. You are not.
Lily: You have seen me without shirt. Do not pretend.

Summary
There was something wrong with Shane Hollander.
He had known it since he was young.
Most people-most kids, in general-had different hobbies and interests. Their attention drifted from one thing to another. They became fascinated with something for a few weeks, only to abandon it for the next shiny obsession that caught their eye.
Shane had never been like that.
When it came to him, there was only ever one thing: hockey.
Obsessive.
That was the word most people used when referring to his temperament.

Summary
Ilya Rozanov, a professional dom, lives in the space between. Between shifts, between countries, between versions of himself. Control is what keeps things from falling apart. Control, and distance.
Shane Hollander lives the life that might have been his. He spends his NLH career closing distance, closing gaps, moving toward things instead of away from them.
When a chance meeting at the animal shelter crosses their paths, something unexpected carries between them, like a call, waiting to be answered.
