The blonde leaned in, angling his head towards Wolfwood’s neck. He was going to bite him, and Wolfwood would die here, his weapon in his hands, useless. He wanted to screw his eyes shut against the glare of those eyes, but he couldn’t. He thought about praying, but then didn’t see the point.
“I’m really sorry about this.” The voice in his ear was apologetic.
Wolfwood goes out on a Hunter job which takes an unexpected turn and he ends up tangled with the vampire who was supposed to be his target - in more ways than one.

But sometimes, treacherously, he wishes they would try to handle the problem on their own, that they would let him sleep.
Healing a Plant, for Vash, means taking its pain away. But that pain has to go somewhere, and he is the only Plant who is able to take it.

Vash swallows again, and to Wolfwood's horror, he can see wetness budding in the corner of Vash's eyes. "Maybe?" Vash says, hesitantly, and then before Wolfwood can respond he keeps going, "Not really, but just, y'know," he makes a wobbly gesture with his hand. "I thought maybe —" Vash hesitates, "I thought maybe you wouldn't want to guide me anymore. After, well, what happened in Dragon's Nest."
Wolfwood coughs on a drag of his cigarette, "S'nothing I didn't already know," he says, gruffly.
Vash looks at him, sorrow in his eyes, "There's a difference between knowing and whatever that was."

Meryl kept thinking back to Tonis, small and still so young in his mothers arms. She kept thinking about the fact that if she held onto him a bit stronger, if she had more conviction, he might still have both of his arms. And about how if she had any less of it, Wolfwood might have not woken back up again in that bar. Surely, getting a bit scratched up was worth saving someone’s life. But that’s not how Wolfwood saw it. To him, she’d forever be just some defenseless little thing that stumbled around helplessly and had to be protected. And for all that he complained about Vash having a self-sacrificial streak, he'd rather bleed out on the floor than admit he had needed help.

Wolfwood almost dies, Meryl saves him and gets hurt in the process. They have a fight about it.

Vash cracks open an eye, and there’s that smile he braced for: small and wavery and miserable. “I’ll be ok. Promise.”
“You’re doing a pretty damn good job of convincing me otherwise,” Wolfwood grits out, instead of, Vash, you stubborn goddamn moron.
“I just need a minute.” They let their head fall forward to rest against Wolfwood’s, so he can feel the soft brush of their breath as they speak. “Then we’ll keep going. Just stay there for a minute.”
It’s not a lot, but at least they’re asking him for something, so Wolfwood takes a breath, trying not to scream, and squeezes the shoulder they’ll be able to feel in a way he hopes says I’m going to take care of you, even if you make it incredibly goddamn difficult.
Vash has always looked at home in the desert sunlight. Wolfwood learns the hard way that they don't do so well without it.
