Summary
He should draw his last knife, the one tucked into his boot- he’s got access, and plenty of time to do it. He should kill the lowly dh’oine right then and there. Instead, he freezes, and he looks.
Vernon’s eyes are ablaze, fixed firmly on the elf even as he squirms and struggles for breath. His lips are curled into a snarl, his hat slightly askew and covering his hairline. He’s got a smudge of dirt along his cheekbone.
It’s a moment of weakness, a split-second of distraction.
Five times Iorveth could have killed Vernon Roche, but didn't (and one time he didn't even consider it).

Summary
“Who are you?” the newcomer grunts, gaze trailing up and down Hans’ body.
Oh. Now that’s a question he hasn’t heard in… a while.
“You don’t know who I am?” he blurts out, unable to hold his surprise back.
The blacksmith removes a glove and wipes his forehead on the sleeve of a rundown, simple shirt.
“Should I?”
Well, that’s an obvious answer but… Hans takes a look at himself. His clothes are fine, yes, but not leagues more than a wealthy merchant’s, or a noble passing through town. He also hasn’t washed in two days, and his hair must be an incomprehensible mess. He will count himself lucky if he doesn’t have straw stuck in there.
“Uh…”
Only then does he notice just how clear the blacksmith’s eyes are. They blink, without ever moving away from Hans, awaiting an answer.
He doesn’t know what possesses him to say:
“I’m Hans.”--
There is a new blacksmith in Rattay and Hans Capon, having deserted his duties as a lord, has nothing better to do than bother him, watch him work and feed him kolaches, in no particular order. If he pretends to be a filthy commoner while he does so, and Henry buys it, it shall not be used as any measure of either their intelligence.

Summary
A look at Henry and Hans's relationship through the lens of sacks (or: Five times Hans struggles to express his feelings and the one time he succeeds).
“Why?” Hans scoffs. “Because I’m useless? A piece of noble scenery, good for a wedding or a ransom and nothing fucking else. If only I was a blacksmith’s boy, right? Or a Jew. No one would think twice about having me along then. We’d go off on this ridiculous suicide mission, and if I got caught, it wouldn’t fucking matter.”
Henry snorts. “That’s the dumbest thing that’s ever come out of your mouth. And I have a damned long list.” He takes a step forward, eyes liquid in the orange candlelight. “What do you think happens to soldiers in war, my Lord? To the peasants, and the bastards, and the blacksmith’s boys? The ones without blue blood and silver armour?”
“I –” Hans swallows. “I suppose –”
“No one has to worry about them getting ransomed, aye. But that’s because they get fucking killed instead. They get stabbed and gutted. Shot. Beheaded. Hanged.” Henry huffs a breath. Gentles. “I’m sure you’d make a fair corpse, Sir Hans, but I’d rather not test that theory.”Bookmarked by cap_Jack
