"Your top five," Kojiro corrects. "Have I given you your daily reminder about how fucking weird it is to have a shortlist of potential girlfriends? Especially for someone else?"
Kaoru keeps a ranked list of girls in their school who would make good potential girlfriends for Kojiro. He isn't prepared for when the girl ranked number one confesses.

Kaoru smiles politely. “It’s nice to meet you, Lucia.” His smile tightens. “You mentioned something about a boyfriend?”
“Yeah!” Lucia confirms with an energetic nod. “You’re Kojiro’s boyfriend, aren’t you?”
Kojiro wants to die.
“No,” he blurts out when he sees Kaoru’s expressions stiffen in shock. “Lucia, no, we’re just friends. Very close friends,” he stresses.
Lucia gives him a strange look. “Really? Oh… sorry about the room, then,” she admits with an easy shrug, and Kojiro’s eyes widen. “We kind of all thought you were dating. Marcel was in charge of the room assignments. You can blame him!” She pats a shell-shocked Kojiro on the arm. “I’ll see you at the reception, huh? I’m going to say hello to the lucky bride.”
“Bye,” is Kojiro’s belated greeting, and he turns to Kaoru, terrified to see his expression, but Kaoru’s face is completely blank.
“Hm.” Kojiro swallows. “What exactly have you been telling your culinary school friends that all of them think we’re dating, Kojiro?”

Kojiro was twenty-two years old the first time he let himself think about Kaoru properly, about the soft tilt of his mouth when he concentrated and the silkiness of his hair and the way he kissed Kojiro, hard and hungry and fierce with desire, like every kiss was another guarantee.
He's twenty-eight, now. Kaoru is here. He looks older, wrinkles in the corners of his eyes and a world-weariness about him. He has longer hair, fewer piercings; sadness pooling in the recesses of his amber-coloured eyes that wasn’t there before.
Kojiro is still in love with him. That much hasn’t changed.
Six years later, Kaoru comes home.
