What Fay was doing, it turned out, was slipping out of her bed and crawling into Caithe’s, ignoring Caithe’s indignant squawks of protest to curl up by her side. Caithe, as much as it pained her to admit, immediately felt that persistent ache in her gut lessen, although her heart was only beating faster now that Fay was so close, now that Caithe’s air was full of the scent of cigarettes, now that she could feel Fay’s warm breath on her cheek. “Here,” Fay whispered. “Is this better?”
“You’re an absolute oaf,” Caithe replied, her teeth chattering with fear and excitement and something as Fay moved closer, gingerly throwing her arm around Caithe’s waist and tucking her nose into Caithe’s neck. “And you’re sweaty. It’s disgusting.”
