Lucifer's cage isn't built for Lucifer's vessel, and Sam is ejected from Hell before Dean leaves Stull Cemetery in Lawrence. But it's been hours for Dean, and days for Sam, and Sam didn't get out before the demons got their barbs into him. Dean's done fighting, and all he wants now is to keep Sam safe, and damn the consequences. When Bobby tells them they'd better lay low for a while, Dean takes the opportunity to let his brother rest and heal. And maybe figure out what Sam's wanted all his life, and what Dean needs to be happy. (AU for the end of 5x22 and beyond)

Typically, Dean’s reaction to seeing him without his overshirt was a combination of appreciative and mother-hen scrutiny, checking to make sure Sam hadn’t gotten too skinny. It should have been offputting, but Sam had accepted long ago that he was always going to want the searchlight of Dean’s attention, however he could get it.

Sam chews the inside of his lip and looks down at the tampon in his fingers, taps the applicator between the webbing of his thumb and index. "I'll do it," he offers, hopes his voice is even and doesn't crack or tremble because looking at the tampon, he can picture the string hanging outside Dean's body and it's weird, what that imagery does to him.

Stupid. He is so goddamn fucking stupid. Running his mouth like a fucking idiot, not knowing when to leave well enough alone.
Bad enough that he just practically talked dirty to his little brother, which, Christ – he must be more stressed than he thought if his self-control mechanisms have started malfunctioning that badly.
But no, no, he came up with a scenario straight out of a bad slasher film, as if that is something normal people talk dirty about, as if that is something Sam would seriously enjoy. As if –
As if Dean hadn’t hunted his own brother through the maze of the bunker, eyes black and hammer raised to strike, not even a full year ago. As if Sam hadn’t, just a few weeks back, knelt at his feet, neck bared, waiting for Dean to deal a fatal blow with a fucking scythe.

Dean turns around. There’s a kid standing there, looking at Dean, then at the girl. He’s tall—Dean doesn’t often have to tilt his head up to look at people but he can tell he will for this guy—with shaggy brown hair and wide eyes. Dean looks at the blonde girl next to him.
“Sweetheart,” Dean says, raising his eyebrow. “You are way out of this guy’s league.”
Or: After a witch hunt, Dean is cursed to lose his memories of Sam. With Sam gone at Stanford, Dean doesn’t even notice. Sam does, though.

After three weeks of chasing monsters, this last one a wendigo smack dab in the middle of the Oregon wilderness at the height of summer, they’d killed it, finally giving them a chance to breathe and unwind, and Sam couldn’t sleep.
He shifted around in his sleeping bag for the tenth time in the last hour, or however many minutes it’d been since they’d laid down to sleep. He squeezed his eyes and attempted to drown out the chirp of the crickets. He wasn’t trying to take it personal, but it felt as if they’d made camp right next to his head.
Sam balled his fists into the sleeping bag material and fought down a groan reminded of the second reason for his discomfort. Three weeks of constant hunting had meant three weeks of no privacy. And his body decided now was the time for the world’s most persistent hard on.
