She falls. She falls and she hits the ground and she bleeds and she doesn’t so much as flinch when he roars from far above her head. She falls and he runs and she sleeps and he hides and she eventually wakes and he finds her and they circle each other. They will circle each other and take turns antagonizing each other like spoiled children, but no one can hurt her the way he has, the way he will.

“Don’t, Tyler.” Her voice came out breathier than she’d like, but this was the first time they’ve been this close since before everything, and it was doing things to her she’d always sworn would never sway her. An unpleasant warmth unfurled within her from his mere presence with no bars, no guards, nothing in between them but a cloak and the suffocating night air. Swallowing harshly, she kept her words to a raspy whisper, “We both know I’m who you really want.”
“Oh, is that something we both know, Cockroach?” His head craned sideways, their eyes connecting as a sardonic smirk passed over his mouth. “I thought we both knew tonight was going to end with an eviscerated werewolf and one particularly pesky raven dead as a doornail, but maybe I missed your memo.”

As if her traitorous heart hadn’t shattered when Tyler had stared her down in the police station, throwing his betrayal in her face without a care in the world. As if the intervening months hadn’t been the most delicious agony as she deliberated over the paperwork to visit him time and time again, unwilling to take the first step yet, but knowing that she eventually would. As if she hadn’t fantasized over the first words she would say to her monster, how to needle and poke and prod and slice to cause even a taste of the pain that he’s caused her.

David Hollander doesn't walk in on them at the cottage. Instead Ilya gets a phone call that his brother has died and his niece is an orphan in need of his care. Ilya and Shane have to make a new plan to make space in their lives for a toddler.
Shane’s shoulders are shaking like he wants to be pacing or screaming or both but he’s holding himself in place on willpower alone, “You can’t risk being deported, not with a kid, not for any reason. And maybe it’ll be good for you, I mean you’ll need help, right? And she’ll help you? And if they ever suspected, I mean a wife, that’s good, right? Everyone thinks you’re straight anyways –”
“Stop.” Ilya doesn’t mean to sound so loud, so angry, but he’s been through too much in the last twenty minutes to modulate, especially in English, “We talked about this. We had a plan. I would not marry Svetlana.” Because I want to marry you, says the little secret voice inside of him that’s only recently gotten permission to be loud in his head.
Shane huffs, adorably annoyed, “Ilya, marry Svetlana. For your niece. You might not be in love with her, but you do love her, don’t you?”

Summary
“You are planning to rob me or what?” He hears Rozanov call, and he can’t help but smile slightly even as he rolls his eyes, closing the door to the linen closet and feeling strangely lighter than when he opened it, reassured that he’s just trying to read into a blank page, that today doesn’t mean anything more than Rozanov doesn’t mind him being around, which is strangely flattering.
“I don’t know,” he calls back. “Don’t Russians like diamonds and fur and stuff? Where should I start looking if I want to know what my options are?”
He hears Rozanov laugh, and it makes him smile.
When he joins him in the living room once more, Rozanov tugs him down to lean against him again. Shane goes easier this time, settling into it, knowing it doesn’t mean anything other than the fact that he just happens to be the closest warm body, the person on Rozanov’s roster who filled today’s slot.
