“Ah.”
“‘Ah’,” Ilya repeats, giving him a look before he looks back to the tidily stacked frozen mouse packages in the freezer and makes a face as a little badly-hidden shudder moves through him. “Why the fuck do you have mice in your freezer, Shane? You are doing serial killer shit now? This is why you have cottage in the middle of nowhere? For serial killer things?”
“It’s for Spaghetti,” Shane says.
Ilya gives him an absolutely horrified look at that and turns a little green, which makes him remember that Spaghetti isn’t just his snake's name.
“Not food!” He rushes to explain. “Not food spaghetti! Snake Spaghetti!”
“What the fuck are you even saying right now,” Ilya says, looking honestly a little concerned that Shane might have something going wrong in his head.
(Distancing himself from almost twenty years of owning a snake, Shane can indeed see why this situation might be a little alarming for someone on the outside looking in.)
(It also clues him in to the fact that maybe it’s not just Spaghetti who should have gotten a little adjustment period.)

Summary
Shane Hollander was in the prime of his career as one of the few omegas in the NHL, with two Cups under his belt and a promising future ahead of him. Then, shit hit the fan. It only took one omega to ruin it for the rest of them. No one wanted to talk about the incident, only the need for further regulation. Suppressants couldn’t be relied upon anymore, not after they failed for an omega in heat. And for the alphas that tore each other apart on the ice.
No, omegas were now considered a danger to the sport. The NHL, outdated as the organization was, realized they couldn’t ban them completely without facing a civil rights lawsuit. Instead, they instituted a ruling that omegas would only be allowed to play if mated, preferably within their own team. He didn’t care as long as he kept playing. At least, he thought he didn’t.
Then he ended up on the Ottawa Centaurs with none other than Ilya fucking Rosanov.

80 years ago, a virus tore through the world. Seemingly vampiric in nature, it introduced a whole new set of rules for those infected. Shane Hollander plays for the Metros in a rapidly integrating society, while his parents work for the Canadian government in the Virus Control Sector, overseeing the laws, regulations, and presence of the Peace Keepers, an authority force trained specifically to deal with the disorderly Infected and Feral.
Ilya Rozanov was just trying to play the best hockey he could, while dealing with a deteriorating family system, and also failing not to fall in love with his rival. He never thought things would turn out like this.
This story exists in a world with the virus and veers off specifically after the Tampa All-Star game.

Summary
It is startling, how quickly the roar of an excited crowd can cut to silence. The air is sucked out of the room, like it leaves with Shane’s consciousness. The rink is a fishtank lit like a stage, and he is drowning in it. Ilya distantly realises he is holding his breath. He slows to a stop, all his senses turned towards the prone form crumpled on the ice. He hears distantly a whistle, people are yelling.
Ilya knows with a certainty this is not a hit a player gets up from.
So why, then? Do his eyes watch as Shane’s limbs twitch to life, a wretched gasp wracking through his chest is visible even from under the padded jersey. A conflicting mix of relief and dread bubble up in Ilya as an elbow braces on the ice and Shane’s neck shifts to lift his head. The arm he’s not favouring is held at an angle that suggests he’s hurt. He is facing away, Ilya desperately wishes he could see his face.
-Shane gets hit badly on the ice and Ilya gets caught between his teeth in the aftermath. A feral hostage negotiation ensues (the league throws Ilya to the Shane wolf and he has to figure it out)
