Silverstone had screamed itself hoarse for him, had waved Union Jacks and neon flags bearing his logo until the grandstands looked like a living, breathing sea of his colors. The world loved him today — revered him with a ferocity he once thought could fill every hollow space inside him.
And it meant nothing.
Because every time he blinked, he saw it again — the angry flush creeping up Oscar's normally composed face during the national anthem. The mechanical, joyless way he'd raised his champagne bottle during celebrations, spraying it at no one in particular with all the enthusiasm of someone washing their car. The way his eyes, usually so warm when they found Lando's, had turned flat and distant, like someone had flipped a switch and turned off everything that made him Oscar.

Lando was the main problem for him this year. And everyone knew this, but only Oscar understood what the problem actually was and its scale. Everything revolved around Lando, he had been the center of his life for several years. And no matter what Oscar did, he couldn't learn to be desirable for him. The only thing he couldn't learn and hone was the real skill of being someone Lando would want.
His fingers automatically broke the wand, it turned out to be quite fragile, Oscar did not notice how it cracked. He hesitated, but the wish was already on his tongue. It's been there for a couple of years now.

Summary
Norris and Ricciardo were potentially the best pairing to ever pilot Sunrise Medusa. In a year and half they singlehanded dealt with 15 VAST emergences. It was practically unheard of.. and it made them very, very famous.
They lived the kind of life they used to only dream of, piloting a huge, beautiful, terrifying war machine against unknowable cosmic horrors.But that was three years ago. And now Danny is dead. The VAST are evolving more and more with every passing month, and there’s barely enough Marionnettes left to keep up. So Lando has a choice. Hang up his suit, retire early, and shoulder the shame of giving up voluntarily when there’s so few people who can do what he does, so few people protecting the whole planet. Or, he can interlace with a new pilot, become half of a new pair, and be forced to know the inside of someone new’s mind so well that his mind and their mind becomes one and the same. And now that he knows his prospective new copilot is Oscar Piastri, he’s honestly not sure which option is worse.
OR
Lando and Oscar are begrudgingly forced to pilot a mech together whilst their worlds fall apart around them and their minds fall apart within them.

Summary
Oscar’s well aware that he’s got that tight clench in his chest again. That selfish, greedy clench that he knows is a bad, bad idea. A way to get his feelings hurt all over because Lando’s going to leave him like he always does, and Oscar will have to act normal in the next interview as if he didn’t just see Lando like this, as if Lando hasn’t fucked him up irreparably for anyone else.
And God knows what the future holds for Oscar, but nothing’s ever going to compare to Lando. Nothing. No one will ever come close.
He knows this with absolute certainty.
