Once he gets to U.A., things begin to shift—and Izuku learns to give hope a chance.

His voice hobbled over as he spoke, caught in a thick hook of swamped tears and mucus. ‘You’re NOT –’ he sniffed, hard; it sounded burnt-out and hurt. ‘–You’re not doing the breathing thing! That’s Regto’s thing!’
Enjin bowed his face and inhaled sharply.
Then he took a good, long look at him. ‘So that’s what this is about.’

“…no, I don’t, Kacchan. And I really don’t want to die alone out in this forest, so please can you just work with me here?”
Katsuki’s gaze remained forward, afraid to look him in the eye after all his harsh words. He knew everything would be better if he just stopped being an asshole.
