He is the Dreaming, and the Dreaming is Endless and separate and its own. Occasionally it has its opinions. Occasionally it makes itself known – and, occasionally, it takes it upon itself to look after its king if he will not see to it, himself.
He should be expecting something. Perhaps, were it all less hectic, he would – but it is not, and therein lies the rub. There are too many cracks to fix and subjects seeking reassurance and Desire’s plots to remain vigilant against, and Dream is stretched thin enough to snap.
“Sweet?” Dream knows that voice, warm and heavy. “Where are we?”
He certainly is not anticipating Hob Gadling lounging groggily in his own bed.
