"Adaine’s been staring at the bright red C on the scorecard from her Transmutation demonstration for so long that she can still see it every time she looks away from it, even though her eyes are blurry with tears that she’s barely holding back, holding the paper so tightly it’s starting to buckle under her fingers."

"Fabian’s perceptive powers aren’t exactly his strong suit—although what is his strong suit, really—but he still notices it when the end of the bed dips ever so slightly with the weight of someone small settling on it. Fabian flips over and stares at the ceiling. The skin under his eyepatch itches, and he resists the urge to rip it off and throw it across the room.
"'What do you want,' Fabian says, and when the words come out strangled, he grabs one of the pillows and smothers his face with it, fingers curling into the pillow cover. His father would call him a coward for hiding like this, for not owning up to his mistakes, but Fabian was already a coward, so. So it doesn’t matter."Or: my take on that "tiny bouncer" thing that totally got glossed over.

Obviously, this means doing things like hanging out with your party member who is definitely not your best friend, and doing stuff like sparring, because Fabian needs the practice. Obviously.

As Gale spoke, he could feel the weight of his words sinking into the person sitting across from him. It was like casting a spell, but took no effort. Astarion had been staring hollowly into his goblet of blood, but at this he made a faintly interested noise. As if the rule were novel and he was considering the shape of it.
"Second, you will obey me in all things," said Gale. There didn't feel like there was any honest way of softening that. Astarion didn't make any sound at all.
"Third, do not leave the tower without permission." Astarion made another speculative noise, considering this one too. But then his shoulders hunched and his eyes skittered down, as if he didn't want to look at what was about to happen.
"Fourth," Gale said, and paused. He started with some context: "There is a tressym upstairs."
Astarion's head twitched. He looked up at Gale, blinking, startled. He had the air of someone who had been bracing for a blow and instead had just been handed a balloon animal.
"A what?" he asked.

Lan Congyi is in the middle of carefully holding his eyelids open to check his pupils, but he still obeys, bless him. "Hanguang-Jun, Senior Wei would like us to tell you that he can't stop crying and he'd like for you to do everything he says until he's better." There's a moment of silence, and then Lan Congyi says to Wei Wuxian, "Hanguang-Jun says he already does everything you tell him."
