They claw at the sand, howling every curse Nana ever taught them. The panic rising in their belly fuels them, the way it did when they were separated from Olu and when they were forced to fight Archie to the death, but the waves won’t stop, Zheng won’t stop, Jim’s legs won’t fucking move.
A flag bearing the image of a devil, its many horns curling from its temples and chin split by rows of fangs, barely keeps its grip where it is tied to the tiny wooden mast protruding from the middle of the raft. Jim gags on the smell of smoke.

Shane breathes in deep, a contented little sigh, and then pauses for another long time. Just slightly tensed, like he’s preparing himself for something, but Ilya doesn’t really have the chance to worry before he says, “I had…a good time tonight.”
“Mm, was good night,” Ilya murmurs. Kisses hair, kisses eyebrow. “Nice dinner, nice weather.”
“Yeah, it was nice,” Shane murmurs. He sighs, clears his throat. “Thank you for such a nice first date.”
Ilya mouths first date to himself, mind running to figure out what that could mean in this context.
Then Shane shifts and says, “I wasn’t sure what to expect when you asked me out.”
Ah.Shane decides to play a game. Ilya is exactly where he wants to be.

“Don’t be embarrassed, sweetheart." Ilya grasps one of the hands Shane has snaked protectively around his own torso. Kisses the palm, the pads of the fingertips. He's in no rush to find out what flavor of this game Shane wants to play today. "Tell Daddy what is in your pretty head.”
