"Mr. Dynamight, sir," says a small, trembling voice.
He looks down. There at knee-height, is Deku. Not his Deku—not Izuku—but a little kid cosplaying as Deku the Hero. The costume has been lovingly and carefully handmade by one of his parents. He has a little Deku-brand green backpack that's studded with pins from the artists' booths. He's got red sneakers on—fuck, the sneakers, that's so goddamned cute. The kid's eyes are huge and full of tears, and he's doing that thing where he's desperately trying not to cry but can't hide the hitch in his voice or the quivering of his chin.
Hell, he's tugging on Katsuki's scarred heart.
Katsuki squats, so they're eye to teary eye. "What's up, Deku?" he asks. That earns him a small smile.
"I lost my mom," says the boy. He rubs at his face with his hand. "I don't know where she is. But—I'm supposed to find a hero to help me. And I found you!" He brightens. "Will you help me find my mom, Mr. Dynamight?"
Shit, how could he ever say no to that? "Sure thing, kid. Here, take my hand."

Summary
The words that bloom on Katsuki’s arm are painfully familiar, to the point that he can hear the grating, wobbly voice saying them in his ear. They’re specific in a damning way, but at the same time vague enough that it could be someone else who says them. Someone he still has to meet in a situation that hasn’t yet occurred.
…Okay, so that’s a bunch of bullshit and he’s not pathetic enough to cling to desperate hope like that for too long. But he’s got some time to convince himself it’s possible his soulmate is someone else. Anyone else.
Deku’s birthday is still a few months away, after all.

The brighter the light, the darker the shadows. And in a super-powered society, those shadows are dark indeed. But whilst the world desperately trained more and more heroes, making that light brighter and brighter, the prestigious hero school, UA, had another idea. Why not tackle the problem at its source?
And so was born the infamous class 1-A. Would-be criminals from all over the country were selected, and a group of twenty now roam the halls of the school, alongside the heroes of the next generation.
Last year, the entirety of Mr Aizawa’s class A graduated. But this year was different. No, he didn’t believe they would all graduate back into society like the classes before them. He believed they could become something bigger. That was why, with gritted teeth and a manic smile, Eraser Head turned to his new class of students and said:
"You aren't villains - you never were, and you never will be. But you can take that fire inside of you and put it to good use. We're in a hero school, aren't we? Well then...
"Let's be heroes."

Everyone in the courtyard disappeared.
Eri blinked. She pulled the strap of her guitar case over her shoulder and rubbed her eyes with both hands. But the crowd that had come for the recital and should have been milling around outside her middle school had completely vanished.
"Hello?" Eri called, cupping her fingers around her mouth. Slowly, she turned in a circle, looking in every direction for the person whose quirk had done this. But no one else was here.
Eri reached up and touched her horn, feeling the length of it. It didn't seem like it had shrunk drastically since this morning. And she hadn't gotten that much stronger. Surely she couldn't have rewound so many people so quickly, without feeling any strain.
Regardless, she was already breathing faster.

Katsuki's pulse roared in his ears and he held on a beat too long, because Katsuki knew, standing here with this child solid and warm against his chest, that those words were not true.
He hadn't saved him. Not really. Not in any way that counted.
This bright, reckless, stubborn kid was going to fall in ways that mattered, and Katsuki was going to be the one who let him. He had stood close enough to catch Izuku his whole life and chosen, again and again, to step back instead.

Izuku might not have a quirk, but that doesn't mean he can't have a special power. Sometimes, when he's walking to school, he can time travel by closing his eyes. It has to be the right kind of moment, the right sounds and smells around him. When he senses it coming he'll stop, block out the world, and for a moment everything goes back to the way it was. All Might is alive. U.A. is the top hero school, and he's going to pass the entrance exam and go there. Maybe Kacchan is even still his friend.
He always assumed it was because he'd made the walk to Aldera a million times, that it was only a harmless kind of daydream. But when Kacchan kicks open the door to his classroom, Izuku freezes, stomach sinking down a decade, and this time the transport comes as a night terror.
In this world, Izuku never met All Might.
