"The bedroom door creeps open and Lily, through her snot and tears, is trying to apologise, because she knows Remus has an early shift at Tesco’s tomorrow morning and Peter has got to catch a train to visit his mum and Sirius hasn’t slept much, if at all, since the car crash. She’s trying to apologise, but Harry gets lifted out of her arms and Lily collapses into a sad puddle on the floor, hair in her eyes and mouth. Through the red streaks in her vision, she can see Sirius holding Harry and trying to sooth him, rocking him in his arms back and forth.
She’s trying to apologise, but she can’t get any words out, can only see baby Harry and keeps thinking, James, I wish you were here, I need you here so badly."

“Oh,” Malfoy mumbled, cringing in the harsh white light. The jeans around his waist dropped to the floor in an unmistakable sound. Hermione froze in her awkward, half-turned position. “Wait.”
With the screen of her MySpace account. The account she was looking at his on.
“Is that—”
Hermione dove. She scrambled for it, hands clawing at cheap cotton-polyester blend. Malfoy was faster. Seekers. Hermione collapsed at the top of the bed, head hitting the pillows in defeat. He plucked his trophy up off of the bed, holding it to his face to peer at the screen in utter confusion. “Is this my MySpace profile?”

When she turns back toward him, there's something about the slant of his shoulders, the angle of his mouth that softens her by a fraction.
How many times has she wandered into bed with Ron? With Ginny or Neville or Dean? Harry too, on the rare occasions they let her go to Grimmauld. On those endless, sun bright mornings that seem to dawn only after the bloodiest of battles. Times when she's needed the warmth of someone else's body beside her to fight off the cold she sometimes thinks has burrowed right into her bones. Times when the thought of being alone is worse than losing, worse than dying, worse than literally anything else.
It never occurred to her that Malfoy might have times like that too. That he might need someone, anyone. Even if it's her.
“Fine,” she breathes, not meeting his eye. “Just keep to your side.”
