Summary
For a hundred years, war and devastation consumed the world. Aang was one of only people left to remember that it ever used to be different. To remember that there was a time when sixteen year old boys weren’t dressed in armor and sent to commit acts of violence, and twelve year old kids weren’t meant to stop them. To remember having friends in the Fire Nation. To remembers walking through Caldera City with Kuzon, choking on Fire Flakes, and watching street performers.
So now that Zuko was here asking for redemption...well, being friends sounded better than being enemies.
Maybe their friendship was destined to be. Maybe together they could bring back some of what was lost.
(AKA, After Zuko joins the Gaang, Aang gets to know him and they become friends).

Despite his refusal, Sokka’s face practically lit up with a cheeky little smirk once Zuko sat down in front of him.
“And yet you came all this way just because I sent for you. What should I do, fall to my knees and thank you for your presence? Making the journey for little ol’ me?”

Zuko’s arms are locked tight around himself, shaking, breath snagging against Sokka’s chest. “Why are you being so nice to me?” he whispers, voice all frayed edges.
Sokka just kisses the corner of his mouth, soft like forgiveness. “Because I love you. And I like being nice to you.”
or, Zuko doesn’t know how to be touched without flinching, doesn’t know what to do with gentleness that asks for nothing back. But Sokka holds him like something sacred—cleans him up, keeps him warm, kisses the trembling out of his spine. Love doesn’t have to be earned here. Not anymore.

A Soul Mark could be left for any kind of love—familial, friendly, romantic, pure, fantastical. Each color represented a different bond between the people that touched skin-to-skin. The colors stayed the same until the death of that person. Then, the Soul Mark would turn grey.
Katara had never seen someone without Soul Marks.
But Zuko’s skin didn’t have colors—it only had scars.

Summary
[Time passes oddly. Between one second and the next, Sokka has the Fire Lord pinned to the wall with his hands around the bastard’s throat. Golden eyes (one gold eye, his mind whispers) widen in shock.
“Sokka?” he chokes out. And then he smiles.
What the fuck?
“Sokka, I—”
Sokka slams his head against the wall, once, twice, and the smile wipes off his face. Good.
“What,” Sokka bites out, “have you done to my sister?”]
Or:
An injury leaves Sokka with amnesia. His last memory is of the failed invasion, of leaving his father behind in enemy territory on the Day of Black Sun. Of hopelessness. Rage.
But then he wakes up, and the war is over. Suddenly, he must come to terms with the fact that years have passed, and that he's somehow the Southern Water Tribe Ambassador to the Fire Nation. He is also supposedly friends with banished-Prince-turned-Fire-Lord Zuko, of all people. Close friends.

Summary
Zuko flinches the first time that Sokka reaches out to cup his cheek.
It’s a visceral thing; a knee-jerk reaction that leaves Sokka stunned and Zuko humiliated, his reaction to something so small weighing down on him like the greatest of failures. He knows he’s not in danger, knows that he never is when he’s with the water tribe boy- it’s just, the last time someone touched his face, it was to permanently mar him. And his body seems to hold onto that fact, even if his heart so desperately wants to let it go.
Or: Zuko usually doesn’t like having his face touched. But Sokka is an exception- and one night, he tells him why

“Every child is a treasure,” the chief says quietly, one hand pressing Zuko’s forehead into his own shoulder as if Zuko is a lot younger than he really is. “I’m so sorry no one has ever told you that before.”
And with that Zuko is crying into the shoulder of a man he hardly knows. A man that has shown him more kindness in the few days they’ve known each other than his own father has in sixteen years.

Hakoda knows he's out of the loop when it comes to Zuko. After all, the first time he saw Sokka since leaving to fight in the war, Sokka mentioned the angry jerk with a ponytail that was chasing them.
The next time he saw his kids, Katara was furious with Zuko for apparently betraying her to help Azula take over Ba Sing Se.
Then, he gets shipped off to the Boiling Rock after the invasion and Sokka, disguised as a guard, tells him Zuko is there and helping.
Before Hakoda knows what's happening, Sozin's Comet has arrived and suddenly Zuko is the Fire Lord.
Zuko is now one of the most powerful people in the world, more powerful than Hakoda.
So why is the Fire Lord, a master firebender with unmatched sword skills, wary of a nonbender whose only real advantage is his height?
Hakoda has seen the dark looks on his children's faces (and yes, that includes Suki and Toph and Aang, and no, Hakoda doesn't know when or how that happened) whenever Ozai is mentioned. He's heard General Iroh sneer his brother's name.
And Zuko?
