Summary
"They weren’t allowed to stay together for long, and the memory of all three of them standing in a line behind the auction block would haunt Fjord for however long he had left to live."
Or - Fjord, Yasha, and Jester are all sold to different owners before the others can find them. Fjord finds himself alone, far closer to the front lines of the war effort than he ever planned to come. He tries to survive, tries to escape, and tries not to wonder if anyone's going to be coming to his rescue at all.
The Mighty Nein was just starting to feel like home. Given the course of his life so far, maybe that meant he should have always expected it to come to a quick and merciless end.

Summary
“I’m not,” and Jester’s voice cracks again but she takes a deep breath and pushes on, “I’m not okay, is the thing,” and Fjord just holds on as she finally lets the words pour out. She starts with being taken, the fear that had filled her and stayed with her, and Fjord’s surprised when Yasha joins in, her breathing growing just as ragged as Jester’s. Yasha falls silent when Jester talks about the second night, about the three of them fighting off the two slavers, and then Fjord surprises himself by picking up where Jester falters when she gets to the torture.
Nott stays in front of them as they talk, the three of them weaving together the long day and night they spent in the dungeon, tears filling her eyes and eventually rolling down her cheeks, but she doesn’t make a sound, no one else in the room does, until finally they taper off, Jester’s voice turning into a whisper and fading as she finishes telling about watching Fjord get knocked out.
“You’re so strong,” Nott’s voice is wet but fierce, and Fjord watches her reach out to grab Jester’s free hand, “you’re all so strong. But it’s okay to let us be strong for you, now.”

Summary
“Enough,” Eadwulf says finally, and it’s muscle memory, it’s instinctive, that he reaches out. He’s a fool, and he’s thinking of Bren, and they’re alone, arcana making the room shiver with heat, chalk dust heavy in his nose.
Essek is not Bren. He side steps Eadwulf’s reach. moving to the opposite end of the room, hands raised defensively. His fingers are crooked with the somatic components for counter spell. The chalk cracks in two pieces in his grip in his free hand.
Wulf laughs; he can’t help it. “We are allies in this, yes? I’m not going to hurt you.”
Essek laughs too; it is the first time Wulf has heard it. It’s a harsh sound, scraping on a throat already raw from shouting. It’s beautiful. It fractures. It shatters. “I’d like to see you try.”
(The years after Bren, before Caleb, with Essek).
