It is December, and Scott has been out for long enough to pretend to be used to it, and things are not perfect but they’re fucking good, and Ilya Rozanov is at his apartment for dinner—has been for over an hour—and he’s still waiting so stupidly hopefully to introduce a boyfriend who very, very clearly isn’t coming.

They dance, and Ilya spins her, like they are a couple in an old movie and not two overgrown kids dirty dancing in a trashy Boston club in a random neighborhood next to a shuttered SoulCycle. He spins her again and then kisses her knuckles like he used to outside of school when they were fourteen. He would always ask for a kiss— he was one of those boys who wanted to kiss, who wanted to charm the girls and make them smile before he fucked them, like it made him special. More evolved.

"I was so pissed about that awards season," she admits, and then goes further, face burning. "Me and my friends burned a Rozanov voodoo doll before the Oscars that year. Not that it worked. Obviously."
Humiliating to admit, maybe, but she's rewarded by the way his pink lips split into a suprised smile, hand coming up to his mouth like he can't believe what he's hearing.
"Oh my god," she says. "Sorry, I shouldn't have told you that. That's crazy. I should have kept that to myself."
Rose meets Shane at a bar and she thinks this time, it might be destiny.
