The truth.
Will's traitorous brain immediately conjures up the image of Micheal Wheeler, his best friend of 10 years.
Also the boy he's loved for 7 years.
Loving Mike, much like being around him, came natural, almost like breathing. He had realized when he was 9 years old, going to bed after an entire day spent at the Wheelers' and it suddenly dawning onto him mid yawn.
It wasn't as dazzling as the movies portrayed it.
There had been no flowers blooming at the edges of his vision and certainly no angels blowing trumpets of triumph.
There had been nothing but an all consuming fear nipping at the heels of his feet as he desperately tried to outrun his own inclination.
OR
A really short strangers things rewrite starting from Will's coming out scene.

Everybody in the party knows everything about him. Maybe it wouldn't be the worst thing to keep a secret from Mike for a little while.
It's kind of exciting. Sneaking in a boy Mike hates.
Will shakes his head, trying to clear Mike from it for the night. Only when he looks back up at Richie, Richie has this conspiratorial smile on his face, like maybe Will isn't the only one eager to piss off Mike Wheeler.
OR: the concept of Richie Tozier being Will Byers' dirty little secret and Mike Wheeler being so jealous he can't breathe. Byler endgame.
