A normal budget meeting goes off track when one of Zuko's advisors disagrees with his decision to create refugee camps in the colones, and Zuko uses his past experience with being a refugee himself to explain why they are so important.
Rewatching Zuko Alone made me think about how useful his experience living in the Earth Kingdom as a war refugee would be to his leadership, and this is a short story about that.

It does mean missing out on things like barbeques and team dinners sometimes, but it’s not as if he would have been able to participate anyway. At this point in his life, risking someone not taking his allergies seriously would mean potentially missing games, which makes it unacceptable. Jackie always makes sure he has a dish or two that’s safe when he’s over at their house, but if he was going to be the one guy sitting and drinking ginger ale instead of taking part in sharing nachos or Korean barbeque or burgers or any other delicious thing he goes in knowing he can’t have anyway, there’s no point in making a fuss about it. He eats at home, has a drink with everyone else, and he calls it a day. Easy. Safe. Foolproof.
But also the reason it doesn’t occur to him that he hasn’t actually told Ilya about any of his allergies until it becomes immediately relevant five days into being at his cottage together.

Summary
Brock and Matt had a... weird tradition. Any time they'd room together, some how they'd end up on a fan work site, reading fanfiction about themselves or their teammates. Just for fun, nothing else.
This trip though, was different. Brock had laid out on Matt’s bed, peeking over his shoulder at his phone screen as Matt pulled up the website and then tapped in his own name. The first work wasn’t them like usual… it was Kirill and Quinn.

David sat by through all of this, still holding the phone as his son had folded into him, resting against him as he spoke to Taylor. He smiled down at his son, glad they were getting along so well. He knew that Taylor was kind but worried that his son's obsession and passion might put her off, but if anything, that passion just ignited a parallel passion in her.
What David didn't know is that Taylor was very used to this kind of conversation, having grown up with Sid in the offseason, coming back brimming with plans, logistics, and information and having nowhere to go with it. Taylor became his conversational partner, taking in everything he told her, and as she got older and got into hockey herself, she took everything he imparted on her and utilised it.
Listening to Shane, all Taylor could think was, 'god, him and Sidney are going to get on too well. God help us.'

One early morning, in Ilya's second summer visiting the cottage, Shane is finally let in on the family secret that has hung over his father for years. He gets the chance to speak to his cousin for the first time and learns a bit more about his dad along the way.
