There was silence. Neither of them said anything, they didn’t even move.
Gale regarded him with wide eyes, seemingly taking his features in anew. Then, he scoffed, straightening up to sit on his bedroll. “Of course. I can’t believe I didn’t see it.”
No fucking way. He was not being this arrogant, this insufferable, in this moment. Astarion must’ve misheard him, only he knew he hadn’t.
“You think yourself that smart, Gale?” he asked with narrow eyes, face twisting with distaste.
“Yes, in fact I do.” Gale replied, his tone returning all of Astarion’s hostility. “I am a studied wizard after all. I’ve read all about your kind, assuming you are merely a spawn.”
“Merely.” Astarion repeated. He kept quiet for a while, attempting to discern what Gale was going to do. He discreetly wrapped his hand around the dagger he hid in the hem of his pants, just in case.
The wizard seemed to be lost in thought for a while. Eventually he looked up at Astarion, his eyes twinkling in the moonlight. “Did you plan to kill me?”
“What?” Astarion choked on the word.

Summary
A remix of Act 2 in which Gale gets more of a character arc resolution.
“Gods damn it Gale!”
Astarion leaps over him. The guard, poised to land an entirely excessive final blow to Gale’s skull, topples backwards with a knife in his gut. The second pierces his neck, sending him crashing to the ground. Astarion yanks his blades back, and drops to his knees beside Gale.
“Oh no no no, you are not dying on me now.”
Gale attempts to express something, but it comes out as a gurgle of bloody bubbles. The world swings to the side, black and spinning.
“I swear, if it turns out I did just watch you spend the last of your magic sending your cat back to safety instead of saving your own damn skin-”
The threat remains unfinished. A healing potion trickles between Gale’s lips.
“Tressym,” Gale says, when he can finally trust his voice.
Astarion is still crouched over him, cheeks flushed, sweat running down his brow and someone else’s blood smeared across his cheek. Gale has the sudden urge to kiss him.
“What?”
“She’s a tressym. Not a cat.”
Astarion makes a noise of such furious, pained exasperation that Gale half expects the dagger to end up in his neck next.Series

"Wyll was off being maudlin, Lae’zel and Shadowheart were busy making eyes at each other (though they’d never admit it), Karlach was far too hot to touch in any meaningful way, and Halsin was out on a “walk” with that old tiefling Zevlor… so Astarion was left with only one choice of entertainment for the evening.
Taking Rolan the tiefling into the bushes and sucking his cock like he had nothing better to do."
Astarion gives Rolan a blowjob in exchange for a magic dagger, but can't stop thinking of Gale the whole time. After having a crisis, getting wildly turned on by seeing Gale bathing, and having another crisis, Astarion spends the next few traveling days ignoring his feelings. At least, until finally, after they rescue the tiefling refugees, he decides to take Rolan to a room at the Inn and ride him in order to decide if these feelings are a Gale thing or a mistake.

-Old habits die hard. That was something both of them could agree on.
Astarion accidentally hurts Gale with his words and feels terrible, concluding that he must be punished to make up for his mistake.
