James pressed one hand to his chest and affected a little bow. “You flatter me.”
Sherlock shifted his chair an inch or two closer to James’, the little tart. His eyes were intent, and hungry. When there was something he wanted, he would pursue it until he’d chased it down, and then, once he had it in his teeth, he would be gone again. There was no point getting upset about it; he didn’t do it on purpose. It was simply the way the glittering, ticking machinery of the Holmeses was made.
“I could do more,” he said, quietly, “than flatter you.”
It was the sort of thing he said when he was only playing, but his gaze was steady.
“Careful, now,” murmured James. They weren’t the only people in the bar. “You wouldn’t want me to get the wrong idea, would you?”
Sherlock Holmes needs a favour.

Will be 32 years old this year, for heaven’s sake. Feel strongly that now is the moment to take charge of my life. It is our privilege to welcome you back, one and all, for the Summer 2024 season at the London Athenaeum. As some of you will no doubt be aware, this past winter saw a spate of minor thefts, with one enterprising thief successfully removing a marble bust of the goddess Carpundia. We are pleased to report that the probate court proceedings are now complete, and all of the stolen artifacts have been returned to us. For safety reasons, we must now ask that all rosaries, japa mala, ojuzu, komboskini, misbaha and other similar prayer beads are left at the door and collected upon exit on account of one of our new acquisitions, a devil vitrified in a prism of glass, and the multiple recent incidents of attempted strangulation.
We are proud to present a slate of all new exhibitions and events, including the crown jewel of this season: an exhibition on the 170 year history of the Athenaeum itself by acting head curator Edwin Payne. This is the distillation of an extraordinary life’s work, and one not to be missed.

I reached out to Edwin Payne earlier this week in the hope that he might be prevailed upon to share some of his great great great grandfather’s personal diaries, so we could perhaps organise some readings. When I eventually succeeded in making contact, he said, “How in god’s name did you get this number? Bugger off and leave me alone, I’m terribly busy.” Assuming this to be nothing more than the famous Payne family sense of humour in action, I naturally called back, but haven’t yet managed to get hold of him again. Nevertheless, I have no doubt that you will all join me in wishing the very best of luck to Edwin and to Charles Rowland, who are currently preparing to mount an expedition to look for evidence of the Lambton Worm early in the new year.
