Vash’s smile returned, a little watery this time, and Wolfwood realized with horror that Vash was about to cry. “Wolfwood. I can take care of myself, really. You don’t need to worry so much.”
“Somebody has to.” He snapped back, “It might as well be me.”
They were close, really close, with Wolfwood’s fists still wrapped around Vash’s coat. Water roared beneath them, and tears gathered in the corners of Vash’s eyes, and Wolfwood meant it. It was all too much, and he meant it. He was a liar and a killer and a monster, but Vash had to know that he meant it.
