They text constantly, detailing their days and sharing everything from complaints about teammates to jokes about other players in the league to the kind of quiet worries about family that don’t need to be responded to, just heard by another person.
Or maybe it’s like Schroedinger’s cat. As long as Shane doesn’t ask, doesn’t speak out loud, he can have this. It can exist, and it cannot exist at the same time as long as Shane doesn’t press too hard. Doesn’t want too much.

The whispered words settle deep within her, a balm that soothes all the pain and hurt of the night before burrowing to the center of her chest, making a permanent home for themselves. Even at such a young, ripe age, MJ knows she’s likely going to love Peter Parker forever, even when she’s old and greying and they’re each married to someone else, and that is the worst part of all this.

“You know something we don’t?” Flash asks, pulling Peter out of his thoughts and seeing the three of them staring at him expectantly.
“Nah,” Peter says with a quick shake of his head, “it’ll just be weird without him, you know? Didn’t think anything would get Harrington to finally retire.”
“Yeah,” Gwen says sadly, pursing her lips before a grin breaks across her face, “really makes you wonder who they got as his replacement then.”
Peter snorts, taking another bite of his sandwich.
“Good luck to whoever has to show them around.”
