"Now," Leighton said, her fingers tapping the steering wheel, "Don't get too scared yet. I'm going to treat you tonight, understand?"
You backed into the corner of the car, as if she would turn around and lunge for you at any moment. "No, I don't understand," you said uneasily, fiddling unsuccessfully with the locked handle. "Just let me go. I have to make money, and I have debts due Sunday, so I don't have a lot of time."
"Payments to your caretaker, right?" she asked, a knowing look in her eyes at they met in the rearview mirror once again. "It's Thursday, right? When's the deadline, and how much do you owe?"
"I need thirteen hundred by Sunday," you said.
She seemed to think for a moment, then nodded to herself. "I can cover that," she said, "so long as you come along with me for the night."
In the midst of blackmailing you, Leighton offers you cash in exchange for a date. For the sake of money, you go along with it.

Summary
Surely there had been many others in the same circumstances you were in now. All it took was one traumatic event to knock them down and onto a dark, dark path. You'd seen it happen many times before in the orphanage. The defiant ones were always the first to disappear. Off the docks, into the sea, discarded in alleyways. Although you were a beacon to all the orphans around you, you couldn't help that creeping feeling which came over you, this recognition of the inevitable.
But the others didn't have wings, did they?
