Madame Morrible’s lips curved, not quite a smile. “Do you. How admirable. You have always had such… appetite. I did not know it spanned learning, too. Hungry for knowledge, are we?” The word struck with a strange force. Galinda felt it land somewhere beneath her ribs; a small, cold weight.
The old witch continued, tone conversational. “Yes… Appetites for admiration. Appetites for attention. Appetites for… indulgence, after all. It is a pity, really. Such a pretty girl. One would hope you might learn restraint, Miss Upland. Maybe it’d help your studies. A little less appetite and a little more restraint.
A hush fell, subtle but immediate. Galinda heard it the way one hears a glass set down too hard in a quiet room. Somewhere behind her, a student shifted in their seat. Elphaba’s head snapped around, eyes flashing.

If it was just her and Laenor she would be ok with it as Laenor would be splitting his time between here and Driftmark so, he wouldn’t be as targeted. But can she risk her children’s lives as well. People support Aegon’s claim just as much as hers. Even if Aegon doesn’t want the throne people will still fight and kill in his name. Whose to say that when her father dies Cole won’t sneak into their rooms and slaughter them all in the middle of the night.
Even her supporters would seek to dispose of the usurper, and she refuses to allow anything to happen to Alicent’s children. Her brothers and sister are innocent. Her own children are innocent.

Elphaba’s neck flushed briefly. She would not let her concern be brushed off by dirty tactics, much less in front of the Palace's staff.
“Highly debatable,” Elphaba said dryly.
The guard, to his credit, became extremely interested in a perfectly ordinary patch of wall just over the secure door’s frame. Sound travelled more than you’d think in this part of the Palace, and thus he had long ago perfected the art of hearing everything and reacting to nothing. Ever. At all.
(Or: their sickeningly sweet love as seen through the eyes of everyone around them.)
