    As he drops into the cave, amber eyes glow across from him. They are heavy and exhausted. Utterly resigned. The coppery scent of blood is thick in the cave, simmering with the heat of the summer sun overhead, but there’s no sickly afterburn of infection or disease in Knuckles’ nostrils. As he approaches, he’s shocked anew by the other hedgehog’s lack of protest.

    Shadow the Hedgehog finally moves. Raises his head slow and deliberate.

    Knuckles hums. “Hedgehog.”

    “Echidna.” Even his voice, normally so commanding, is weak. “Come to finish the job?”

    What if Knuckles is the one who brings Shadow home?

She was like the sun, pulling everything and everyone into her. At first, Shadow didn’t think he could be charmed by such childish flattery. He was the Ultimate Lifeform. He wasn’t created for such feelings.

    But now here he was. Head over heels for her like some sort of love-sick puppy.
