“It’s alright, A-Xu,” Wen Kexing murmurs over and over in this soft, wounded voice, as if he’s the one who’s hurting. “Hush, you’ll be alright, it’ll be over soon. I’m here, A-Xu.”
Zhou Zishu can’t reply. He can’t even breathe without searing agony, but his body won’t allow him to stop, so he gasps in and in and in, and sobs when he can stand it no more.

Every time Sauron asked for the Rings and Celebrimbor refused was a door slammed in his face. A request for their next meeting to be subtly more monstrous. He made sure Celebrimbor knew that. And yet while Celebrimbor’s dread was intensified by the knowledge of who was doing this to him, it was the fact that it could always get worse which truly worried him.
Sauron was, in fact, deliberately leaving room for it to get worse.
Or: Sauron pushes exactly as far as he needs to achieve results.
