“If you were bothering me, I’d tell you that you’re bothering me,” Eddie assures. “I always tell you when you’re actually bothering me, don’t I?”
“Yes.”
“Richie,” he steadies his breath, trying his hardest not to scare him away. “What’s the matter?”
The silence is long. “I can’t,” he says, sounding almost defeated.
Eddie bites his lip hard, knowing his next words are more than risky. “Can I come see you?”
Maybe it was an excuse to get away from his marriage. Maybe it was an excuse to be with Richie. Maybe it was because he was genuinely worried about his friend.
It was actually all three.

“What is happening, exactly?” Eddie speaks up. So far since they sat down here, his friends have been ogling him like some zoo animal, whispering things to one another. It made him feel self conscious. Richie sat at the couch across from Eddie, and has contributed nothing verbally, and has refused to take his eyes off him. It’s a bit off putting, the way he just stares in silence.
“You’re all scaring me,” Eddie frowns. “This isn’t funny.”
“Eddie,” Ben tries to say, like the name itself is heavy in his mouth. “What do you remember?”

“No,” he hesitates. “What’s the last thing you remember?”
Eddie stops to think. He really tries to think about it. It’s like it’s right there, right around the corner, but he just can’t reach it. Not completely.
He looks at Richie, who looks right back at him, with a paranoid look in his eye.
Richie was by his side for… something. He had Richie’s jacket. And when Richie left, he hugged it tighter. He can’t really remember why. What was so important about the jacket?

His palm was a warm promise against Eddie’s skin. Eddie shifted closer so that their noses touched, and his gaze flicked to Richie’s lips—soft and tinted. Richie’s other hand moved to rest on Eddie’s waist.

“Not that I’m not enjoying our banter, buddy, but word on the street is you got a problem you could use some help with,” Richie says. “What’s bugging you at two in the morning on New Year’s Eve?”
“New Year’s Day,” Eddie corrects again.

There’s another beat of silence before he hears Eddie sigh audibly over the phone line. "I’m thinking about leaving my wife.”
“Why’s that?” Richie asks. He’s already hooked. He genuinely cares about all of his callers and wants to help, but something about Eddie’s got its nails in him. Honestly, he doesn’t mind all that much. It’s a nice change of pace, to feel something.
“We don’t get along all that well,” Eddie tells him. “I… I don’t know. We don’t really have anything in common. She’s sort of controlling, I guess. And I think I might be gay, so—”
