this is like if thomas jefferson miku binder was a 70k HR fanfic written by a college graduate. i fear a diverse OC friend group and a "woke" reading list cannot rescue shane from being a conflict-averse and self-interested member of the bourgeoisie...
interesting new angle on ilya's family; overall the interpersonal aspects of this fic were compelling

Summary
Canada had given him his life as he knew it, but it had never felt one hundred percent comfortable, either. He missed Russia sometimes, but it didn’t have the thing that mattered most. Ilya had exactly one home, and it was this: his face pressed into a smooth chest, his head tucked under a strong jaw, with freckled arms wrapped around him and delicate fingers combing through his hair. Anywhere else was a temporary excursion.
A treatise on second (and third) languages, homesickness, acceptance, Shane's struggle learning Russian, and the things people do when they care.
A rewrite of Plentiful, but Ultimately Finite.

Summary
Steve learns about sex and love, from his first less-than-satisfactory attempts to get laid to figuring out what he wants most in the world (one guess who that is). This started off as a simple five-times fic. I tend to write Steve as virginal (though eager) when he gets together with Bucky, but I wanted to force myself out of that and give poor Steve some experience. It makes sense that he’d want to take that amazing new body out for few test drives, right? But it kind of mutated and grew, and the fifth time turned into multiple times. Then the “plus one” turned into a story of its own rather than just a little scene… I couldn’t help it!

Bookmarker's Notes
“He said he didn’t want to be alone in the world anymore, and T’Challa could do this for him, or he could shoot himself in the head. Those were his only two choices.” She laughs softly, sadly, her voice wrecked. “He felt guilty because he knew you’d feel guilty. You’d think you’re supposed to be angry with yourself for going back in the ice in the first place. He said it wasn’t you. It was him. He wasn’t meant to ever come out of the ice. Some things are better left buried.”
--
He loves you. He’s in love with you. And he’s scared.” She looks back at Steve, and Bucky knows she’s watching his fingers trace the curve of Steve’s cheekbone. “Scared you won’t love him back. Scared that he can’t fix everything. Scared of never being enough.”
--
“Because the world needs people like you. People who are good. Strong in so many ways. People who fight for the right reasons. People who are honest and not afraid to stand up for what they believe in.”
“People need Captain America.”
“I wasn’t describing Captain America.” Bucky shakes his head. “Erskine picked you for that serum because of the man you were. You know what would have happened if you weren’t. We saw it. And don’t think I didn’t try to pull your face off when you were sleeping. Just to make sure.”
Steve huffs a rough laugh, and Bucky thinks it’s the proudest moment of his life. “That explains all those pinch marks.”
--
“Right. I didn’t say don’t use it. I said don’t lift a fucking building.”
“It’s a wall.”
Bucky looks upwards. “Mrs. Rogers, I do my best, but your son is the type that tries men’s souls, and we all know what sort of state mine’s already in.”

Summary
“Come with me.”
Bucky freezes like he did almost eighty-two years ago when Steve had first kissed him.
“Please come with me,” Steve begs, pushing himself up on his knees. “Please don’t run again. I can’t…I couldn’t live with myself if I had to watch you slip through my fingers again.”
Bucky and Steve go on the run. Then, they stop running and put down roots.

The older man worries his bottom lip with his teeth for almost a minute before he sighs again. “If it all ended and you had to walk away from it: your shield, the Avengers, being Captain America…” His hands clench into fists on his knees again and he looks across at Steve. “Would I be enough for you?”
“What are you saying?”
Bucky shrugs and offers a hopeful, “What if we didn’t leave? What if we just stayed here and finally left the war behind?” He stands, coming around the table to sit between Steve’s legs, kissing each bare knee with care. Steve has to catch his breath when Bucky looks up at him with more love than he could ever deserve and asks, “Would that be such a bad ending?”
He shakes his head because, no, it wouldn’t be a bad ending.

Summary
She used to blot her notes in this manner, sometimes, as a wordless memo to her future self: look here, this is important. The method might have changed but the message hasn’t strayed one jot. And above it, across the middle of the page in striking, desperate block capitals are the words:
JBB IS ALIVE.Peggy Carter's final mission.

beautiful character study
--
Later on, the male nurse she likes is using a handheld vacuum to get rid of the dust that drifted to settle on the carpet and skirting board. Peggy looks at his hair, the way it curls around his ears, and chases her mind in endless circles in the hunt for his name.
“…so I told her it was a dumb idea,” he says into the lull as he shuts off the vacuum. “And she just turns around to me and goes, ‘Evan. How many chances are you gonna get to watch a meteor shower?’” He laughs.
Evan. The name settles onto her shoulders and Peggy relaxes into her pillow, resting her head on the lip of the headboard. He’s kind, is Evan. He does this with practiced ease, slipping his own name into the conversation when he notices she hasn’t used it. Staring hard at that cowlick tickling his ear, she thinks Evan. Evan. Evan. Fierce enough that perhaps it will stick this time.

Summary
In a different universe, an older Bucky Barnes intercepts a message that SHIELD (now headed by Alexander Pierce) has located the body of Steve Rogers under the ice in Greenland.
Bucky may be retired but he knows one thing: he can't let them stick Steve's body in a lab.
No matter what it takes, he'll bring Steve home.

Bookmarker's Notes
It will be quiet and peaceful, gentle even. Steve will lie beneath the trees and the sky and the animals and Bucky will be able to sit with him every day, for as long as he wants. Steve won’t be lost and alone ever again. He’ll be safe and loved and Bucky will protect him.
Then, one day, Bucky will dig a matching grave and lay down next to him. It’s a good spot, he thinks, surveying the defrosting landscape. It’s better than anything they dreamed back in Brooklyn where most bodies were just taken out to an island in the Hudson.

bucky pov. his internal monologue is very dry.
Bucky, constantly: I have to stay away from Steve and keep him safe!!!
Also Bucky, immediately after: I wonder what Steve's doing right now. I love that guy. (It's okay, Bucky, we all understand.)--
He’s not following HYDRA movements. He’s not trying to track Steve. And he’s not leaving any clues as to where he is. So it is completely, one hundred percent, totally by chance that he and Steve run into each other a week and a half later.
--
“Alright, Buck,” Steve says. He sounds like he’s smiling a little. “You’re the expert, I guess.”
“Yeah, I sure as hell am,” Bucky tells him. “Nothing else in my fucking head but you. Seems like I never even took a shit without you.”
Steve laughs a little. “Yes, you did. We didn’t have a bathroom in our apartment, so you had to go down the hall for that.”
“Somehow I get the feeling you came with me,” Bucky says.
--
“I’ll let you go,” Bucky says. He’s trying to keep his voice even and not let Steve know he’s on the verge of puking. “You sound a little busy.”
“Oh, this is no trouble,” Steve says with another shield-throw grunt. This time, Bucky hears the clang of the shield hitting its mark. It doesn’t settle his nerves as much as he’d have thought. “Rather talk to you than just about anything else on Earth.”
“Just about?” Bucky checks despite himself.
Steve laughs. “Jealous?”
Yes. “No,” Bucky huffs.
“Only thing I’d rather do than talk to you is see you,” Steve says. “That’s all I meant.”
--
“Well,” Steve says. “Bucky has three younger sisters. Makes sense he was good with the little girls.”
“If I were that good, I would’ve taken them all and run,” Bucky says bitterly.
Natasha snorts. “There were over a hundred of us. Even your metal arm couldn’t carry that many.” She looks away. “They—punished you. In front of us. We never saw you again. And then they made us forget.”

"Tony," says Steve, crouching at Winter's side. "Get them out. Far from here as you can."
"Steve," says Sam, but there's nothing else to say. Bucky is trapped here to die and Steve will never leave Bucky. It would be easier to take the moon out of the sky.

part 1: sam and steve go on a bit of a road trip with murderous cyborg. they sit around in a cabin waiting for something to happen while trying to help WS. When Hydra attacks things get real interesting.

Bookmarker's Notes
He makes sure to mute himself before tapping out of the Skype session just to make extra sure Steve isn’t woken up, but before he goes, does something so stupidly sappy that he’s almost glad Steve isn’t awake to see. He kisses the fingertips of his flesh hand and presses them to the screen once again. It’s not like the touch can transfer through- even Wakandan tech isn’t yet that advanced- but it settles something inside him to carry out the impulse. He can’t kiss Steve while they’re on opposite sides of the world. He might as well steal what little moments they can have to put in his heart to keep.

Summary
"Maybe they were just duds," Steve says, his thumb moving gently over Bucky's hand. "We can get some more."
They were magic beans, that's what the package called them. They were supposed to sprout within a week. They were intended for ages five to ninety-five.
Maybe Bucky's just too goddamn old.
--
Bucky has precious little patience with himself (and even less for his horticultural endeavors), but Steve has more than enough to go around.

Bookmarker's Notes
There are way more colors here than the ones that came with the kit, so Steve must have gotten out his own supplies. Used his nice paints on this dumb little pot with seeds that aren't even growing.
"Idiot," Bucky says out loud, and then he has to go and find a tissue box because he's crying.
These goddamn seeds might never open up. They might always be lifeless little pods hiding in the soil. The one that's sprouted might never grow the way it's supposed to. And of course Steve painted all over their little pot for them anyway, for Bucky, loving and thoughtful.
He missed something though, and Bucky gets a Sharpie out of the junk drawer so he can fix it himself. Writes ROGERS-BARNES in big block letters right across the center of the rocket. He uses the hot pink paint that came with the kit to add lopsided hearts on each side of their names.
