After a few more strikes, he dropped the ax, walked away from the tree, and watched it as it fell. Then he picked up a leather jacket from the ground and walked over to you.
He wasn’t built. You could tell he’d never needed to look in a gym for self-validation. You saw it in the way he carried himself. With a feline poise that carefully stalked the line between confidence and vanity and only occasionally swaggered into the latter.
He seemed to be crossing that line now, and you went hot with anticipation at the realization that he wanted to show off for you.

Now was the part that needed some acrobatics. He drew his legs up towards his belly and then began to extend one leg up as he held his core tight. His body began to twist and tilt in the harness. He started to extend the other leg, and reached out to the flat wall off the overpass to hold himself in place.
This was awkward as hell, because he was going to be writing nearly upside down, but he could do it.
Very carefully, he sprayed his name in neat block letters under Mando’s.
He made the tittles over the j and the i hearts, just to be like that.

She blinks, more than slightly startled, her struggle ceasing for a moment under the force of her bewilderment. In her defense, she’s still being held by a hand that feels like it could snap her wrist like a twig just by squeezing too hard, so she thinks she has a right to be a little confused.
Also the words make no goddamn sense.
“What?” She asks blankly, giving another testing tug against the hold. No dice. His grip doesn’t go tighter, but neither is he anywhere close to letting go.
“You’re out here doing magic and shit so you can steal from the crowd, right? Do some magic if you want the money.”
She gives him an incredulous look.
“Dude, I just tried to,” she’s suddenly aware that they are in public and that she and Riley will likely need this section of the park in the future, “rob you,” she says in a low hiss. “And now what? You want a fucking show?”
“You want the money? You ain’t stealing it from me. Do a trick and earn it, fair and square.”

“What’s this?” James asks. He’s lifted a map off Thomas desk, and below is a neat pile of papers in Thomas’ handwriting. A quick glance reveals that they’re poems, full of inkblots and crossings out, some more legible than others – James knows how Thomas begins to scribble when he gets excited.
They’re breathtakingly beautiful - as Thomas’ words always are, as everything about him is. But thy are different, too; the previous poems James has read had been full of wit, clever turns of phrase, puns, and double entendres, just like his arguments. But these – they’re love poems. Written with passion and adoration, the force of it evident in every stroke of the pen, every word.
“They’re addressed to a man,” he points out the obvious.
