These days, Jughead gets more questions about the Paladin case than the comics themselves. A couple years back, some kid at the Times dug up the newspaper records, wrote a retrospective: ‘The East Village Vanishings: 30 Years On’. The somewhat unfortunate photo she chose - of a disheveled, confused-looking Jughead and friends accosted on their way out of the police station, Betty’s eyes piercing the camera lens - ended up plastered across every page fifteen whose editor had taken a shine to their story. Strange as it is, with that kind of early beat generation, vintage charm.

In 1940, the Paladin, created by Jughead Jones and Cheryl Blossom, entered the pages of Lunar Comics. Just another superhero, perhaps, but a string of mysterious disappearances in real life New York begin to rival anything the two could write.

Los Angeles, 1987: Carmen is back, Bash is spiralling, Rhonda is growing her hair out. They're all, like, fundamentally unhappy, and they have a wrestling TV channel. What will happen?

    Summary

"“I’m A Weirdo” by The Lonely Island is playing as we pan around Jughead’s shitty apartment. It’s a complete mess, papers, rubbish and clothes everywhere.

Eventually, we see that he’s asleep on his desk, a battered typewriter next to his head. Conspicuously stupid hatless, he’s wearing a t-shirt and boxers. On the desk, his phone is vibrating with a call from “Betty”. It wakes him up as the lyrics begin, and he starts at the time."

Seven years after the uninterrupted events of 'Killing Mr Honey', Jughead Jones works himself out.

She makes a list in her head of events during which you don’t really have the time to mourn your dead best friends: when you think they’ve ascended to be with a pagan god and you’re waiting to join them, when you’re being periodically fed drugs in a cult nunnery, and let’s not forget when you’re escaping a supposedly dead local serial killer! The latter is also the perfect time to realise you’re a lesbian; staring at the boy who’s saving your life and thinking, “Shit. Dilton was right. That hat is fucking stupid.” The high had entirely worn off back then; it might now be time for some withdrawal symptoms.

There really is no point in feeling things. Resentment is pretty good, though, as it goes, and Schadenfreude can get addictive, especially when it’s all-encompassing. Like, self-directed; like, I’m the werewolf and the moon simultaneously, peppered with craters and sprouting claws.
