The cabin itself lay nestled up in a tree-covered hill. The large log structure stood proud amongst the snow covered pines that surrounded it. Jayce was surprised to see a path through the snow to the covered porch had already been carved for them. The snow was taller than Jayce realized was possible, almost up to his shoulders on either side of the cleared path to the porch.

She looked utterly out of place in the most wonderful way: Mel Medarda, the poised and terrifying councilor, barefoot in his kitchen wearing his oversized sweater. It was gray, wool, and comically large on her, the sleeves swallowing her hands so badly she had to keep pushing the cuffs up to write properly.
It should have been mundane. It wasn’t.”

But she smiles, instead. That smile. The one she perfected years ago when she realised people don’t want the truth from women like her, they want the illusion that power is beautiful and painless, that every triumph is effortless and every defeat merely a stepping stone.
