Ilya’s smoking in the parking lot in Tampa when he realizes. Last time he and Shane spoke on the phone he didn’t say ‘I love you’ back. Shane had said it, and he had made a stupid fucking joke.
If he had died today, if the plane had crashed, he wouldn’t have gotten the chance to tell Shane he loves him one last time.
It sits wrong in his chest. It’s not guilt, at least not completely. It’s something sharper, like something is out of place, or unfinished.

Pike was back to calling Roz by his first name. This whole thing was really weird. Zane didn’t even know they were friends. But now Hayden Pike was on the phone, asking about Rozanov like they’re best buddies, or long lost lovers. He’s begging, he’s desperate, and Zane has never been more confused in his life.
When Zane Boodram receives a text from his wife after their almost plane crash in Tampa, telling him to please call this number because there’s someone on the other end who desperately needs to speak to his Captain, he definitely is not expecting Hayden Pike of the Montreal Voyageurs to be the person on the other end of the call.
Whilst he tries very hard to listen to Barrett and mind his own business about the whole thing, he’s got one question that he can’t stop swirling around his head.

J.J.’s eyes settled across the parking lot, where Shane had hung up the phone but was still crouched, his silhouette dark, head down, hands at the back of his neck. Fatigued, trying to make himself smaller, hide how exposed he clearly felt. Because he and Roz were a thing. Not a one way thing but an actual… thing. Shit.
J.J. hated Florida. The humidity fucked up his skin, and they had those giant snakes that weren’t even supposed to be there but some idiot Florida men had set them free and the swamps there were so fucked that they thrived. J.J. set his jaw, determined, before he responded. “Tell Jackie to get three tickets.” He reached into his bag and confirmed his passport was there. “It will be harder for Coach to punish all of his captains. I’m going with you.”
He nodded his head definitively.

After the Centaurs' plane almost crashes, Shane, Hayden, and J.J. go on an increasingly ridiculous road trip across Florida to get to Ilya and his increasingly suspicious but always lovable teammates.

The CGM app looks like a goddamn mountain range, and for the entire first two weeks after The Breakup Cliff is waking up several times a night to call Roz and get him to deal with the high or low that he’s trying to sleep through.

Shane suddenly remembered that Lisa was a doctor at a children’s hospital. He had a sinking feeling that it couldn’t be a good sign that she was talking to him using what he suspected was her doctor voice.
“It’s just a bad stomachache,” Shane told her.
He opened his mouth again to tell her that he’d had worse, but closed it when he realized that actually, that definitely wasn't true. He hadn’t ever felt anything like this. In fact, he was starting to think that breaking his collarbone again would be preferable to his current situation.

He slowly disentangles himself from Ilya’s grip, never being more thankful that his husband’s the world’s heaviest sleeper. His fingers tingle as he sits up, feeling as though he’d slept on his hands all night. He pads slowly over to the bathroom, raising a shaking hand to close the door gently, wincing as it makes contact with the door frame. The bathroom isn’t large, but he instinctively heads for the corner furthest away from the door, jamming himself between the bath and the wall, pressing his spine as far into the corner as he can as his breaths begin to cycle quicker.
Shane has a panic attack in the middle of the night. Ilya loves him through it.
