I had been incredibly skeptical when Ratthi had sent me ‘Midnight Eclipse.’ I knew what fanfiction was, I had seen it in the more niche entertainment feeds before. Never specifically for Sanctuary Moon, but I'd assumed it existed. That didn't mean I had any actual interest in it, though. When I had first looked at them, I hadn't liked them. The quality varied too much and a lot of them weren't finished, or were really short, or really out of character. And I hated that. I really really hated that.
This one was different.

Ángel tries to be a good secretary. Unfortunately, outside of certain impossible, supernatural, totally physics-defying circumstances, it seems like detective-ing is mostly pretty boring. It’s a lot of standing in the rain, waiting for something to happen. And taking shifts sleeping while you wait for your contact to call you back. And filling out business tax forms, and income tax forms, and rental insurance forms, and—just—paperwork, in general. So much paperwork! Ángel never had to read this many documents when he was a CEO.
“That’s because you were a terrible CEO,” Oliver says helpfully.
Ángel gasps. “How could you say that!!”
“Because of your track record as a CEO?”
“Well,” Ángel huffs. “Well! Well… yes.”

“Where are you from?” Loqi asks abruptly.
“Lucis,” Prompto tells him, answers so fast he knows it comes across defensively.
Loqi’s eyes narrow and he looks Prompto up and down, his disbelief as palpable as his distaste.
“Who are your parents?”
Prompto sighs, blowing back the long part of his hair.
“My foster parents are scientists,” Prompto says. “I don’t know about my birth parents.”
“So, you’re no one,” Loqi sneers. “How charming.”Alternatively: The first Niflheim-Lucis peace keeping mission is going to go off without a hitch. How can it not, when Prompto and Loqi have the command?

“A zombie attacked you?”
“We saw them in the movie and now they’re here,” Noctis says, and twists in the chair in order to press himself against Ignis. He’s usually such a bright, happy child, it hurts to see him so withdrawn. Understandable, under the circumstances, but still.
“The movie?”
“Lord Amicitia let us watch a zombie movie this afternoon,” Ignis reports.
“Ah.” Oh yes, Clarus’ first love- shitty old horror movies. He’s fond of cornering Cor when he’s stuck in the hospital and can’t escape and making him watch them with him, so Cor’s seen a zombie movie or two, or twenty. The ronin, with its almost-human body and terrifyingly human voice, would certainly seem like a zombie to a scared young boy who already has the undead on the mind.
(an attack on insomnia strands the young prince and his friends, and cor finds himself fighting to get the boys back to safety- and following the rules that will keep them alive)

Too much magic, they say. The entirety of Winter, solely under Noctis’ tenuous control. It’s difficult, not least of all because it isolates him, makes it impossible for other Gods to be around him, let alone anyone else.
“Didn’t it hurt?” Noctis asks. “When you touched me.”
“No,” Prompto says. “Should it?”
Noctis doesn’t know if it should, just that— “It does everyone else,” Noctis says.
“Everyone?”
Prompto sucks in a deep breath and pushes it out long and slow. He doesn’t seem scared when he reaches for Noctis’ hand, doesn’t even hesitate to interlock their fingers, and press their palms together.
“There we go,” Prompto says softly. “To start making up for it.”Alternatively: The only thing that can threaten the God of Winter is a broken heart—and no one will ever get close enough for that.

Maybe they don’t really have the time to be taking on a hunt like this, not when old Cid could be done fixing up the boat any day now. It isn’t even an official mark, meaning there’s no reward. Only, when Prompto caught Noct’s gaze lingering on the string of the hunter who requested this of them, which dangled several inches off the ground, fraying at the end, he knew they would be taking this job regardless of what’s in it for them.

“Okay, fine,” Noct says, giving in. “I’m dying too. Really dead, actually. I left everything last minute and everything’s a mistake.”
The line crackles on the other end. There’s a thud, and Noct wonders whether Prompto’s head just met his desk.
“Tell me about it,” Prompto wails. “I’m not built for calculus. I’ve integrated so much today my eyes are swimming.” He makes an indignant noise. “And I can’t work anymore! I keep getting distracted!”
Noct feels a twinge of sympathy. “Wanna come over and work together?”
“Astrals, yes,” Prompto sighs. “I need someone to hold me accountable.”

Summary
Ignis has an answer but he reflexively looks over his shoulder, to gauge Gladio’s opinion before offering his own. Only, Gladio isn’t there—he’s not going to be there ever again.
“Ignis,” Prompto says softly. “What should we—what do you want us to do?”
He managed last time, when Gladio went off on his ill-advised quest. Though he knew Gladio would be back, at some point then. Now all he can see in his mind is Gladio’s blank stare, the easy way he passed what they needed into their enemy's palm and ignored their pleas.
“Iggy,” Noct urges.
“We’ll be back to collect the reward within a week,” Ignis says, more confidently than he really feels.
They have to be able to survive on their own. There’s no other option.Alternatively: Gladio’s gone. Not off on a noble quest. Not dead, but something worse—now he’s their enemy.
