Grace vents again, slow and deliberate, and it nods its head. Its mouth is pressed into a taut line as it removes its hands from protecting its appendage, slowly lowering itself back down until it is laying on the nest. I can hear a shaking in the muscles of its nimble-claws and lower arms. Grace has no reason to be embarrassed, procreation-like activities are a normal part of the human life cycle. I will make Grace healthy. And if the Portable Thinking Machine is anything to go by (it is), I will make Grace feel good too. Grace deserves that. Grace deserves to be healthy and feel good and be taken care of and I will give it all of that.
Or: Grace wakes up with a boner, and Rocky's laptop has taught him that masturbation is good for humans. He doesn't stop to consider whether Grace really wants help.

Grace’s short history of relationships taught him that maybe he was just childish. Maybe he just— maybe he didn’t want a relationship. Maybe he just wanted a best friend who wouldn't leave him when they got married. That he was the one that was the problem.
Adults had sex. That was a fact of life. They fell in love and love meant sex and that was just how it was. If you didn’t want to have sex then you weren’t really in love. Sure sex didn’t equate to love— people had flings all the time— but romance and sex were the kind of things that went together. So Grace had just— accepted the words of his girlfriends. That maybe he just never actually loved them the way he thought he did. Maybe he just liked them and tied the thought of romance to it so that he could monopolize their time. That all just came together so maybe he actually was just leading these women on. All of them gave him everything he needed in a relationship but he’d never been able to be what they needed. Wasn’t that selfish? Wasn’t that cruel?
Alternatively: Grace is alloromantic asexual. This is traumatizing in many ways. Not for Rocky though. Rocky's perfectly okay with being in love and never having sex.

'The human probe arrived twenty earth years into Grace’s life on Erid.
As self-proclaimed ‘second contact’, the probe announced that a human delegation would be sent to Erid, and contained detailed notes and data of how they would survive in our environment. They knew nothing of what we had made for Grace, of the biodome and the xenonite suits. Instead, they had come up with their own method of adjusting to life on Erid. Of a deep, cultural exchange.
It was ingenious. It was crazy. It was human to the core of it. I was only a little jealous that we hadn’t thought of it first.'

Grace breathes in sharply at the fantasy, letting his hips rise a little. The quiet pleasure is starting to grow inside of him. Just a twinge in the muscles, but it's making his shoulders relax for real. The quiet is coming into his mind, too. Slowing him down so that his breaths can overtake his thoughts. Clear out the clutter and settle down into a dark nest of uncomplicated sensation.
"What Grace doing, question?"
Grace tries to take care of his body's needs alone, but an interruption by Rocky reveals the eridian knows exactly what Grace has been hiding from him. Now Rocky wants to help Grace with his "ritual", and begins to obsesses over this foreign concept of pleasurable body stimulation. There's absolutely no way their individual needs and trauma will get tangled up in the complexities of human sexuality, right?

“Grace can feel song, question?” Rocky asked, slower than usual. The cooing had lulled him, too.
“I… Maybe? Yeah,” Grace whispered, and Rocky had to focus to understand the slurring.
“Humans can feel sound, question?”
Grace huffed a small laugh. “Sometimes, yeah. For example, when the sound is… very low and loud, we can feel it in our chests.”
“Song is neither low nor loud.” That would have an entirely different effect.
“I know. I can still feel it, I think. It’s strange.”
“Good strange, question?”
“Good strange, yeah.”
Grace could feel sound. Grace could feel Rocky’s songs.
Hmm.
Rocky discovers nature's laws aren't as inflexible as they'd thought. He puts this to good use.
