Summary
This was born from a conversation I saw on Tumblr about Sam and Dean's character flaws. It was said that Sam could be selfish while Dean had a tendency to always assume the worst in everyone. Then the conversation posed the question of how Dean would react if Cas was truly dead and Sam decided to leave hunting for good. My mind immediately turned to tragedy and the aftermath.
Told from Sam's POV. It's not stated, but assume Cas is dead in order for this story to work. Also, it's not exactly Sam friendly. He's carrying a shit-ton of guilt.
No Beta. I literally scrawled this out on paper last night and typed it up today.
The title is taken from Castiel's speech in The Man Who Would Be King, "Freedom is a length of rope, and God wants you to hang yourself with it."
