“My- my name is Shane Hollander. Today is May 5th, 2026. Uh- I was at the ball earlier today?” His eyes shift off screen, and he gulps. Ilya watches his Adam’s apple bobbing like it’s the most precious thing on Earth. Shane looks back at the camera. His eyes start shifting, like he’s reading off cue cards. “I’m- I’m asking the MLH to provide… 100 million?” Shane looks surprised, his voice cracking on the ‘million’, and he looks up from where his eyes are fixed. The video cuts to black for a moment, and then Shane is back on the screen. His hair looks different than before, messier. The cut on the side of his temple is streaming blood, a wound re opened, and one of his eyes is half shut. “I am asking the MLH to provide 100 million dollars for my safe return home.” He says, his voice trembling. Ilya feels weak.
He stumbles back into the precinct, lit cigarette still hanging off his fingers, but paying it no mind.

Summary
Someone’s posted a shaky video from the stands, just behind the whole altercation. It’s close enough to catch the snarl on Rozanov’s face as he charges up the steps. He’s so pretty, Shane thinks faintly. The video starts too late to show what set him off, but it catches the tail end of what the man is yelling, the things he's saying about Shane, before pivoting to calling Rozanov a cunt and bitch and a pussy instead.
Rozanov drops his gloves for Shane. He wishes he could just be grateful, but it feels a little bit like the end of the world.

Summary
Shane almost believes he’d been hearing things for a moment — perhaps caught halfway between a dream and real life or just sleep deprivation having finally chased him down.
But he hears it again, the heavy footfall of someone moving around his hallway. He swallows around the lump now forming in the back of his throat just as he hears someone bump their hip into the side table at the end of the corridor. He knows that’s the case because Ilya had done it a thousand times, almost always forgetting it was there and complaining that it seemed to move an inch on its own everyday just to spite him.
Shane leaps out of bed fast without thinking, the muscles in his tender abdomen pull and stretch in ways they haven’t in a long time, and he ignores the pain that blossoms in his middle as he scoops Mika into his arms and instinctively cradles her to his chest.
She’s not very happy at the sudden movement, hiccuping twice before thumping an angry balled fist against his chest.
“Fuck…” he whispers, tears springing to his eyes. He watches as shadows suddenly pass from underneath the door.

There was something small and confused in the question. But Ilya was still furious and raw.
“Well I would,” he sneered, “if there was anything about you that was fucking interesting to talk about! It would be nice to not be so fucking bored and miserable!”
The second the words left his mouth, he watched the pain roll across Shane's features like a thousand fractures shattering through glass.
Ilya had seen Shane nearly break ribs. He had seen him miss game-winning shots, take hits that left bruises blooming purple and black across his skin. He had never seen this.
Shane closed his eyes for a long moment. He shook his head slightly, a tiny movement, then nodded once as if agreeing with something only he could hear. His face twisted briefly with a fresh wave of pain before he forced it to still.

What if Shane and Ilya don't make up so easily after the Boxing Day fight? The Centaur's plane never malfunctions, so Shane never proposes. Instead, Ilya gives him an ultimatum on coming out and going public. It backfires spectacularly.

Summary
Shane only knew that what Ilya spoke about that day had been hard for him because Shane could hear the anguish in his voice over the phone and Shane buried his hand in Ilya's hair not even hesitating "you don't need to tell me what you said that day, I know it was private for you and I did tell you to just say it in Russian if it made you feel better, I just wanted to be someone you could talk to about things" firmly. Ilya knew that and he loved Shane for saying that as he silently looked up at Shane feeling caught with the way Shane was looking at him so tenderly before admitting "but I want to and I need to tell you because you're getting too good at this Russian thing and you're going to know what I said some day" firmly.

When Shane starts learning Russian it reminds Ilya of the confession he made to Shane over the phone when he was in Russia for his father's funeral. Ilya feels like Shane will eventually figure out what he said that day so he decides to tell Shane what he said during that phone call. Shane tells him that he doesn't have to tell him anything about it but Ilya tells him anyway along with some other things Ilya had been keeping to himself.

He should just give the man his wallet. That’s what they say to do, isn’t it? Shane should hand over his wallet then the man would leave. There was no reason to be a hero or a tough guy, there was nothing in his wallet worth the kind of trouble someone who hides their face and attacks from behind is capable of.
