Sighing, Tenna cups the bottom of his plush stomach, feeling the way it bows out into his hand. He feels so… old. It doesn't help that he still has those photos from the early days in his career pinned up and down his mirror, taunting him with the reminder that he's going out of fashion and getting out of shape. What's even worse is he's due out for dinner in thirty, and he’s forced to wear his trousers low under the curve of what can only be described as a belly, because they won't button any other way. It frames the whole – situation – in an unforgiving way, creating a noticeable pooch that hangs just slightly over his waistband. Then, there's the issue of how they dig into his hips, causing them to spill over just slightly. If he’s not careful, he’s going to have to start describing them as love handles. Love handles! What sort of performer has them? None! Not a single one, the last time he checked. And he checks a lot. Turning on his heel, he walks over to his couch and sits down, pointedly ignoring the way his pants feel even tighter. They bunch at his crotch awkwardly, the fabric around his thighs stretched tight, and he finds himself trying to adjust himself to no avail.
How did he let it get this bad? Again?

Summary
Unlearning the lessons Shigeo had taught himself for five years is quite an undertaking. Uncorking those emotions and being forced to process them is overwhelming, after so long of having relative silence. He thought he’d gotten it down; thought he’d had it. It’s not so hard to laugh.
Dealing with fifteen years of trauma is also quite an undertaking, one that piles atop his carefully recovered shell with a vengeance. And it turns out that, despite his efforts, he’s been doing more harm to himself than good.
And it might just kill him.

People have different sides to them. Mrs. Kageyama is fine with that. She knew getting into motherhood that her kids would bring some things to their parents, and other things, they’d want to deal with on their own. That’s fine. That’s what people do!
She, for instance, worries over her kids out loud, in front of them, but only about the little things. Bumps and scrapes. Bent spoons, dropped dishes. Not the big things. She locks the big things away like an adult, only letting them out a little bit at a time so she doesn’t explode. She whispers to her husband in the dark when the kids won’t overhear them: are there any psychics in your family? Do you think your parents would know anything about how to help Shige?

Thirty-something Kageyama Shigeo's already frustrating day is about to get much, much worse.
The title is both a reference to the story of Cain and Abel (from the opening chapters of Genesis in the Tanakh/Old Testament) and a conversation between Sinclair and his friend Demian in Hermann Hesse's coming-of-age novel Demian: One man slays his brother. The Lord exiles him, but not before marking him in such a way that leads others to fear and avoid him on sight. What if that 'mark' wasn't an easily visible thing, but a certain bearing? A demeanor? Or, in this case, world-breaking psychic powers with manifestations their owner couldn't hide if he tried, and a quiet intensity that others occasionally find intimidating, even though it coexists with kindness and compassion? (And what if that isn't the whole story?)
Inspired by that scene in canon where high-school boys attempt to bully young Shigeo and he ends up saving them from his posse. There, he isn't yet sure how to defend himself without causing others physical harm. Here, he's managed to figure something out...

They stepped forward.
Susie flinched. She hated to admit it, but despite her tough demeanor, she was a little scared. Not because she wasn’t confident in her own ability to defend herself against an attacker, she could deal with those just fine. But something about the figure, their silence, it unnerved her more than she was willing to let on.
“H-Hey! What are you-”
They stepped forward again, their movements almost zombie-like.
“G-Get back! I’m warning you! You don’t know what I’m capable of. I’ve slain a giant ya know!” If she had any common sense in that moment, she would’ve realized how ludicrous a statement like that sounded to anyone that wasn’t her.
Another step. It was so loud, louder than the rain, louder than her own heartbeat. She held her breath, bracing herself as the figure stepped into the light, revealing themselves to be none other than…
“...Kris?”
